One of the boards favorite "hot seat " coaches appears on his way out from a major program. Hasn't been formally announced. But spreading thru coaching community.
Zero chance. His recruiting classes have not done well and his trainings are pedestrian. Look how well Michigan rebounded this year after Gordonas recruiting classes left Michigan.
There's no way He Who Shall Not Be Named comes back to college soccer. This is official, btw. The release is claiming Bluem has "retired." Not sure I'm buying that, but whatever. http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/031918aaa.html This is a good college soccer gig. Huge athletic department in a major league city in one of the bigger conferences with an MLS academy in town (for now) as a recruiting base and 3-4 really fertile recruiting bases not too far away (Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago) and some good out of conference rivalries not too far away (Akron, Pitt, Notre Dame, Louisville, Cincinnati, Xavier) and good academics. I expect there will be a lot of experienced names and high-profile (as college soccer goes) names applying for this job. If I were the person doing the hiring, my first phone call would be to the Rocky Mountain area.
Names I would consider, were I OSU: Dave Brandt, unemployed (his folks aren't overjoyed!) Jamie Franks, Denver HC Oige Kennedy, Stanford assistant Brian Maisonneuve, Indiana assistant Russell Payne, Army HC Paul Snape, Butler HC Johnny Torres, Creighton assistant Chad Wiseman, Western Michigan HC
I know it's not who you were thinking of, but do you think Embick would be interested? Akron is the better college soccer program right now but OSU has way more resources. If Embick can get MLS-level talent to Akron he can get it to Columbus and OSU can likely pay more and gets him in a much better conference.
On your first point: From your mouth to God's ears! I believe THE Ohio State University is the largest Athletic Department in the WORLD. The second is University of Texas. Somebody check if that is still true. The real point is that Buckeyes should be national contenders in every sport. Period. A good soccer coach could win serious hardware with this program. As you say, the recruiting is all within a day trip, and the rivalries are all right there, both in conference and out. I too recommend that OSU's first flight should go to Mountain Time Zone. Even though Jamie Franks at OSU would pose considerable threat to my Zips, such a hiring would be great for NCAA Soccer and good for American Soccer as a whole.
OSU may (presumably) have greater resources than Akron, but Embick is already among the highest paid NCAA coaches. There is what OSU can pay a soccer coach vs. what OSU are willing to pay a soccer coach. Are the soccer specific resources at OSU greater than those at Akron? Maybe. In a negative way, many in Columbus are happy to have a mediocre soccer program, if you catch my drift. There is no argument on the conference, though WMU's ascendance in the MAC is encouraging. Not to be ignored is Akron's proximity and close ties to Internationals SC in Cleveland. Crew academy is more renown, but not necessarily of better quality.
Maybe since all the players have to compete with foreign players for limited spots, they should declare this one a global search and find a foreign coach who wants a second chance and a path to MLS coaching?
Not Dave Brandt. Now at Hope College. http://athletics.hope.edu/sports/msoc/2018-19/releases/20180319rn17yq
Also I wouldn't say OSU is a better option for Embick. He already has an established program where he's making $250-350k salary (based on bonuses) plus another $300-400k a year off of camps. Why would he leave? OSU *might* be able to match that salary, but I doubt they'd want to. Then he'd have to go through the process of establishing a significant summer camp program, which he already has at Akron. A huge advantage Akron has as well is the school's acceptance rate is incredibly high, and a ton of guys on their team get put on academic scholarships. Guys like Scott Caldwell, Kofi Sarkodi and Chad Barson were all on 0% athletic, 100% academic money. Those guys could probably get some academic $ at Ohio State, but not nearly 100%. With only 9.9 scholarships per team, this is HUGE for recruiting. On top of that, I've been on both campuses A LOT. Been in both locker rooms and been in all the facilities at both schools. For soccer, Akron hands down has better facilities. Their home field may be the best atmosphere in the country when its packed. I know OSU is building new locker room, weight room, study hall facility for non-revenue sports so maybe they will surpass Akron this coming fall. But as far as I can see, Embick would be leaving a national contender to go to a program that would probably top out around where Akron is now, for less money. That wouldn't make any sense.
Do you honestly think he'd entertain it?? Do you know how bad Miller High Life tastes once you've had Dom Perignon??
Odds are, no one on this board knows him (Porter) personally. So, one cannot really make that decision. Maybe college coaching suits what Porter wants? Maybe he enjoyed that lifestyle? Doesn't matter if he'd entertain it, that call HAS to be made. EDIT: Dave Brandt is a prime example. DIII guy, goes DI for a spell, then pro for a spell, and now he's back at DIII. No one really knows unless you personally know the coach.
I know that Caleb Porter thinks he's god's gift to American soccer coaching and that the job he really want is the USMNT gig. And I know the path to getting that job ain't thru Columbus, unless it's with the Crew, or any other college soccer gig.
