I have been a Cowboys fan since I was about 4 years old. So that would be 42 years. I do not know how I became a Cowboys fan, I just did. I grew up in an Eagles home. My parents had season tix since 1948. My grandparents before them. I have 3 brothers, all are eagles fans. I went to every Eagles game from 1974 until 1984, and cheered against them every game. By rights I should have grown up an Eagles fan too. I guess I just grew up in an era where Roger Staubach was on every weekend and the Eagles sucked. I'm also sure that I thought the uniforms were cool too. Plus, I'm contrarian by nature, so it was always a great way to piss off my brothers, lol. No, I never lived in Texas. South Jersey born, raised, and have always lived. As for the old EPL/Europe soccer argument "how can you be a fan of a team you've never seen play in person?", while I've never been to Texas Stadium, I have managed to see the Cowboys play in person 1-2 times per season every year since 1972, when I was 6. This year I am definitely going to see them in Baltimore and Washington ( I have cousins in the DC area). And yes I wear my jersey wherever I go to a game, even in Philly! By the way, I'll see your Nick Foles and raise you a 1968 Mel Renfro (which was my most recent Cowboy card purchase!
Now I know who I have to pray for. (HA.) I have to believe there's alot of drunks that just talk unlimited amounts of shit when ever you go to the games in Philly. & I've just been buying up Foles auto rookie cards that are under $20 on Ebay. Hoping that this season or next season, he starts a couple of games for an injured Vick, and performs well. That way, those $20 cards will be worth $200. It would be a nice little investment. & all the cards I've posted have gone for over $100.
No need to pray for me at games. People do talk alot of shit, but for some reason they do not generally choose to direct it at me. At 6' 3" and 235 lbs. and being a former athlete, even drunks are usually smart enough to find someone smaller to get mouthy with. Besides even in Philly if you are there to watch the game and are not obnoxious generally the worst you get is a little good natured ribbing.
Ah ok. I've talked with my dad about driving to Dallas to see an Eagles/Cowboys game, but we've decided that we'll wait until the Eagles win a SuperBowl. I'm hoping its by 2014. We would get to see two Eagles games in Texas in the same season (@Houston & Dallas.) Of course, knowing the Eagles, they'll blow it in the NFC Championship Game.
And that is why you are a Cowboys fan, you're a frontrunner. The Cowboys were good when you were just starting to understand the game and it was more fun to watch Roger Staubach and his white shirted teammates and their bible thumping follower than watch Norm Snead, John Reeves and a fading Roman Gabriel struggle to get their teams above .500 for the season. My guess is that you are a Yankee, Canadian and Celtic fan too.
Ouch, did someone piss in your Wheaties? How does one call a four year old a "front-runner"? Even more curious, how does one call a 46 year old who has followed a team (and supported them) for over 40 years a front runner. I was a Cowboy fan in the late '80's when they went 1-15. Even when it was not cool to be a Cowboy fan. As for your "guess", you are 100% WRONG! I am a Phillies season ticket holder and have loved them just as long as the Cowboys. I am a Flyers fan, and not much of a basketball fan, but casually follow the Sixerx. Hell, I am a Rutgers guy when it comes to college football, even though everybody in our area used to be Penn State fans. Above everything else, at this point in my life it is all about the U! Surely, I am not a "front-runner". I am very sorry for you and your Norm Snead - John Reeves history. Not everyone can have 51 years of history that includes 5 Lombardi trophies. But try and remember, our differences are what makes the world go around.
No, no one has pissed in my cereal but I have always been interested in who and why people follow certain teams. There is an interesting chapter in Nick Hornby's book "Fever Pitch" about this where he decides to follow Arsenal and why. When we first become a follower of a sport the team we decide to be a fan of is usually the local team unless there are a number of teams in the local area like London's multitude of soccer teams. Then why we decide on a team can be a number reasons (I decided to become a Penn basketball fan because at the time they were the underdog of the Big Five just like my last place Phillies and Eagles had been). He calls this imprinting just like water fowl decide who they are going to follow even though that may not be their parent or even their species and how they stick with that decision forever no matter how wrong they may be. As to why a 4 year old would decide to root for a team 1500 miles away from his home and spurn the team their family loves can best be explained that he or she is tired of being disappointed by the home team and want to root for a winner. It is very rare to find someone who is raised in a city with a professional team and spurn them for a team from say, Cleveland. They are almost always teams that have had dynasties in their history like the Yankees, Celtics, Steelers, Canadians and yes Cowboys. If fact right now there are probably a number of young Philadelphian's who are now finding soccer and are becoming Manchester United or worse an LA Galaxy fans. Now it is true that the Cowboys had a couple of bad years in the 80's but you were already imprinted and the damage was done; you couldn't quit them if you tried. Just like I will never quit the Eagles even if they never win a Lombardi Trophy in my life time. Aztec I'm sorry if I offended you but I find people like you interesting, in fact one of my best friends, who is from Detroit is a huge Steelers fan for the same reasons. The thing is, Pittsburgh is a lot like Detroit, a large mid-east metropolis developed on a single industry. Now why anyone would root for a self righteous, lost perspective(A billion dollar stadium in the middle of the suburbs, really!), bible thumping, holier than though organization like the Dallas Cowboys other than their record is beyond me! By the way did I mention I really hate the Cowboys. I wish I could wish you good luck with the upcoming football season but lets just say I hope no one on Cowboys gets injured this year.
I saw Foles Eagles jersey at the U of A game on Saturday. & on a random note, does anyone know what the season ticket prices are for Eagles games? I can't find a season ticket price map on the Eagles website. & yes, I know about the wait list.
Yeah. 4 Picks for Vick. I could really care less about his 'Dog Killa' status, but he was absolutely garbage today. Its not as if we versing a great defensive team like the Steelers or the Ravens. We were facing the Browns! That's why we need to start Foles. (Yes, I'm lucky enough to own this card)
I love the Union, but I also love the Eagles. I have missed only 4 Union homes games since inception. They were missed because of weddings or work issues. This is the first game where I may not go just because I don't want to. I am leaning towards staying home and watching both games on TV. The MLS scheduling sucks.
It's mid November and the Phillies have won a game more recently than the Eagles. Really all that needs to be said about the 2012 Eagles.
Philadelphia, PA (AP) - A nine year-old Philadelphia boy was at the center of a courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Philadelphia Eagles whom the boy firmly believes are incapable of beating anyone.
I have not ever been on the Foles bandwagon, I thought that Vick (when healthy) gave us a better chance of winning than a rookie. However, Foles looked very comfortable today and he did very well on multiple drives--especially when the game was on the line at the end, including two 4th down conversions. That was a significant growth game for the kid. He also looked like a Brady Bunch kid with pads on during the post-game press conference.
