well, i think we're throwing the racist card around too easily, as is far too often the case these days. toot, though not very PC, has a good point.

nothing wrong with Landon Donovan being the face of MLS, but a young African-American as highly touted and marketed definitely wouldn't hurt MLS' overall popularity. And i think we're only in the beginning stages of Dovovan being marketed to the US, especially if he can manage to stay in MLS longer.

i am in overall disagreement with toot though. this isn't "the one thing" MLS needs. MLS just needs time, it is taking root. ;-)

The thinking is wrong, but he has the right idea. I dont want anyone to take this the wrong way, but unlike in other countries, soccer is thought of as a rich, white kids sport. Its not being played in the inner cities of the US. Its played out in suburbia with soccer mom's dropping their kids off to play after school. There are a hundreds of potential Freddy Adu's out there(its funny to think of this kid as having reached potential, which he hasn't, but you know what I mean).

I don't know if your right....

But I can say, on my crusades to convert fans of other mainstream sports into fans of MLS, I find that my black co-workers are much more open minded than many of the white fans I try to convert. Many have even seen a match on Soccer Saturday (part of one anyway).

That being said, had Beasley scored in Korea, I don't think it would have made much of a difference.

I'm suprised a few people think this way. It's sad to see.

What about Roy Lassiter, Cobi Jones, Mamadou Diallo etc? Two of them have been MLS leading scorers and big stars in MLS. It doesn't matter what race he is the US needs a huge star.

And even that will not make the sport any popular than others.

Interesting considering most blacks in the United States have some white blood in them.

BTW, ethnically, Earnie Stewart is just as black as Barry Bonds.

And oh, Pakistan is in Asia. Therefore, a Pakistani is Asian.
