I've said this before. Why French? Mandarin is spoken more in Toronto. Italian is spoken more in Toronto. Toronto is more Chinese, Italian or Greek than French, I could go on. But again why French? when another language would be more representative of the city.
Not everybody is from Toronto though, there are a lot of travelling fans from neighbouring cities that come to the games. And also French is representative of Canada as a whole, Toronto FC is the only professional soccer team in Canada, and supprted by people across the country. This really isn't at Toronto thing, but more of a Canada thing. Besides Mandarin would be hard as hell to pull off....lol
What? The only professional team in Canada. You must be kidding. I think the Montreal Impact and the Vancouver Whitecaps would care to disagree. I get the feeling that in Montreal they sing in French cause they are French. And if the team is to represent the city- then it should and not worry about the rest of the country. They have their own teams.
The Whitecaps and Impact are just as professional as the Bulldogs, Marlies, and the AHL. So, not very. And whether you like it or not, TFC is representing Canada in the MLS, the success of which is essentially a benchmark that determines whether or not Vancouver or Montreal may actually get a real professional team. You have to look no further than the Fan Rivalries board to see that people consider TFC the soccer face of Canada, not just Toronto. So yeah, we'll chant and sing in English and French and if you don't like it you can go start your own supporters group that can chant in Mandarin or Klingon or whatever you want.
Why French? Because its a beautiful language and with regards to this particular chant it just wouldn't translate into English as well. Until you can offer up something comparable in Mandarin, Italian or Greek FCStalinist I'm afraid I will be partaking in this one come Saturday. Allez les Rouges!
i like bringing the french element into the chants. sounds good guys. here's one in italian for any hardcore I-ties.... ale toronto, ale ale ale, conquista la vittoria, ale toronto ale
