I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that his name is not Spanish.

interesting find, and a kid w/ an interesting story as he has overcome a very serious injury, (albeit one that will not hamper his play). I'm guessing he is an Alvial find. The only info I could come up with is that this kid is a central defender, or at least was used that way by the CHILE U23 team.

Now we are all scratching our heads as to what system and what personnel we will use in the back. I'd of thought that with Gbandi's exit, we were shopping for a left outside back.

As young as this guy is, I don't know that he is a penciled in starter type. Interesting that we use an international spot on this kid. But, if someone on the inside knows something special, then power to them.

no we're not. Morrow has said a couple times they are looking at three at the back.

As i've said about 200 times, they are going with Wagner at left wingback... not left back since it's not going to be a 4-4-2 at this point.

not trying to be difficult, just honestly confused.....
3 in the back, and one of those backs will fly up and down the flanks? That would mean defending w/ 2 when one penetrates.

In a typical 3-5-2 the wide mids play up and down the flanks end to end. In a 5-3-2, you have 3 stay at home defenders and then additional flank coverage from two wide defenders that can join the attack.

Where will Wagner play? Will it be a 3-5-2 or a 5-3-2 ?

I kid you not, if you watch Ali's videos you will see an attacking center back. I've never seen a CB attack but this kid does it all the time. He is basically running a fast break. I bet MLS coaches would shat a brick if a CB intercepted a pass and proceeded to make a run for the goal.
    He chops people down too.

Born of Iranian father and Chilean mother in Austria, Benny Feilhaber-esque nationalities. He moved to Chile when he was very young after his father died. He debuted in the chilean 1st division at 16 in 2004. In 2005 he broke his cheek bone and had to have it surgically repaired and now wears googles, edgar david style. He also made his debut for the full national team as a 19 year old. Maybe more importantly it says that a business group bought his right in 2007 and he signed with Deportivo O'Higgins (delightful name) in 2008. No one can say he's not interesting!

Edit: after watching the video, I see no googles, shows how much you can trust wiki. Reminds of a Toja in defense, full of hustle a bustle.

    no problem.
no basically a flat three of CBs. ??? Davino Moor. Obvisouly the missing piece is the left center back. The ?? is the spot that Morrow is looking to fill, based on the team now it would be Yi/Pitchkolan/Daniels/or even Wallace. But I think we all know those are not ideal season starter options.

Wagner will be the wingback or wide left mid. He's very ideal for that spot. Morrow wants him out there, and just in case anyone isn't sure that is enough, Pareja also talked to me about how ideal Wagner is for that left wingback/midfield.

    a traditional 3-5-2... (or maybe a 3-4-3.)

    -------forward---forward
    -------------amid
    wagner--dmid----dmid--rightwingback
    -------LCB-----CB-----RCB

At least he won't be keeping the forward onside all the time like some of our guys did last year.

Remeber all those times we got scored on last year were all the guys but one had their hand in the air signaling 'offside'?

OK, now that sounds more like it. However, I would diagram it more like this:
    -------forward---forward
    -------------amid
    wagner--...............--rocha
    ----------dmid----dmid
    -------LCB-----CB-----RCB

And, in this set up, I'd expect Wagner and Rocha to go from beyond the top of the 18 to the opposition's touchline looking to disbalance defenses with penetrations and crosses. The way I envision it, the off the ball guy goes, and the non-ball, (weakside) guy stays. This way you've always got a guy to cover the back door if the back three have to slide to defend the corners of the field.

I'll bet this system will get guys like E66 of of Morrow's back for lack of width. However, if Morrow puts Wagner on the right and Rocha on the left, my head will explode.

Our shopping list is still a stretching target forward, a proven playmaking # 10, and a leftback.

This is where the hire of the young kid Ali confuses me. Is he a left side central defender? Or, is there an issue with one of our center backs?

Found this from a 2005 article about Ali:

The 18-year-old central defender impressed fans and journalists in Chile this season and recently scored the decisive goal to send his club Coquimbo to the finals of the national championship. The finals will be played on July 8 and 16, 2005.

Manouchehri, who is two-footed and impresses by speed and strength in the air, is nicknamed "El Irani" (the Iranian) in the South American country, although not speaking Farsi at all. The youngster was born as son of a Chilenian mother and an Iranian father in the Austrian capital Vienna, before moving to Chile with his mother at the age of two. Ali Manouchehri, however, never met his father, who died before the birth of his son.

Found this from a 2006 article from an interview just before the World Cup:

IranSportsPress.com: Thinking of playing in Europe?

Ali Manouchehri: Perhaps or elsewhere, such as United State. I wouldn't rule anything out.

IranSportsPress.com: How would you compare Chilean league/football with that of United States or Mexico?

Ali Manouchehri: Chile is going through a rebuilding process at the moment. Younger blood is being injected into the league. US and Mexico have a more established and organized league system and hence that explains the source of strength for their national team.

Great find. So, we can begin to fill in the puzzle pieces:
    -------forward---Cooper
    -------------amid
    wagner/Toja--...........-------rocha
    ----------Ricchetti----Serioux
    -------Ali-----Davino-----Moore

I'd still like to move one Defensive Mid, and drop Toja into that role. As well, I'd like to see us pick up a great playmaking center mid, and a decent forward. I could not bitch much if those things were to come to be.

Too bad that C. Gomez is off the table. That would have helped.

Maybe we should sign him and have him mentor Denilson on how to maintain possession.

He looks pretty solid to me. He's definitely got some wheels and foot skill.

    yes exactly.

mine too, but I seriously doubt that will happen.

don't forget Morrow is a big squad guy, so while this guy may not be a pure lefty, he certainly might be able to play that left center back spot and maybe other spots if/when guys are missing.

Of all the defensive trialist we are hearing about, I think only one will be signed. The question is just which one.

He may like going forward, and maybe taht worked well in the system he was playing in before, but why does anyone think he can't be instructed to stay at home? You know, it's not really all that difficult to simply tell the player what his responsibilities are. Perhaps Morrow appreciates his footskills and his athleticism, but as a more dedicated defender. Look, with 3 in the back, we are going to need our backline to be comfortable on the ball. If we ever want to play the ball out of the back they are going to have to be confident on the dribble and making short passes. Davino fits that bill, Ali Mechahi Hiney Ho looks to be a good fit, heck even Moor is capable.
