The club's draft was excellent, but the measure of Toronto's success this winter will come if and when it finds a star player for its designated player slot. Johnston insists the club may use the slot, but it remains to be seen whether TFC will find a player that suits its needs. With rumors of Maurice Edu transferring now dead, Johnston's chief concern in the international market will be trying to convince draft pick Joseph Lapira to sign with Toronto. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=501952&root=mls&cc=5901 - Players galore picked in Supplemental Draft: Most of the players expected to be picked in the SuperDraft who weren't selected did get snagged in the Supplemental Draft held Thursday by conference call, and they weren't alone. The 14 teams picked 51 players, with only Toronto FC showing restraint. TFC took Ohio State striker Xavier Balc - one of the SuperDraft Snubbed - with its first pick and passed in the other three rounds. Nine teams picked one player apiece in each of the eight rounds and Chicago, which had accumulated extra picks through trades, grabbed six. Toronto FC (1): F Xavier Balc (Ohio State). http://www.socceramerica.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.showArticleHomePage&art_aid=25316 http://network.nationalpost.com/np/...-picks-up-balc-in-mls-supplemental-draft.aspx - TFC caught in a sticky situation: http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/296891 - French players in limelight at TFC tryouts, Tryout pool whittled from 300 to 40. http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/296890
If any of these French players make it to senior roster, then I hope they apply for Canadian citizenship. If that kid (Diarra) ever develops into something special, then I hope CMNT take a good look at him.
Yeah, that would be something else. Get some young Brazilians as well and make them naturalized Canadians, even if it pisses off Sepp Blatter.
Ya, it seemed to me like he tried to make it look as though it was TFC's fault they weren't good enough. I mean with the whole dude from brazil who wants to make it big time to help his family but comes up short, you feel for the guy. Here's the article for those who havent read it: http://www.thestar.com/comment/colu.../article/299044
I think there are a couple different ways to look at this. On the one hand I'm sure that if some phenomenal talent shows up he'd get an honest shot, but given what I've heard about the actual scouting process (Johnson and his immediate staff are barely there) it seems that the entire thing is a dishonest as the article makes it sound. If its a marketting scheme, cool, but let it be known. If you're not actually looking to fit anyone into the team cuz your roster is full or you have someone else in mind, then make it only for locals so as to dissuade these kinds of stories.
