Columbus put the discovery bid in on Tuesday, IIRC. In fact, the offical USSF release announcing the U23 team originally mentioned that Testo was a Crew player, but they quickly removed that.

Right. This is why a lot of versions of the Olympic team story say that Whitbread is the only non-MLS player.

In the Dallas Morning News today they had they U-23 squad and listed Testo as a Columbus player......surprised the heck out of me.

A confusing thread title, to be sure.

It might be appropriate for a Moderator to place a question mark at the end to clarify the subject.

fid has been following this one closely, and has expanded on his answer over on the Crew boards.

Suffice it to say that this is apparently up in the air. SOMETHING is going on, and SOME people in a position to know have been saying he's signed, but there's no official word from anywhere and there seems to be a snag.

    Stay tuned.

This is the same Crew Braintrust from last year, right?

Any insight to why and/or how they've suddenly grown a brain?

    Chad Marshall
    Chris Wingert
    Dave Testo

That's quite a group of additions, to go with Kyle Martino and Edson Buddle.

    Yes, it is.

Could really suck in August, though, when they're all gone.

I didn't read where they qualified. What's your source?

    i have.

the ussf originally released the roster and it said testo was a member of the crew, and "had signed through the discovery pick 2 days earlier" and it was quickly removed from the release but the original release sent to many media outlets had the error and led writers to believe he had signed.

the plain and simple of it; he has not signed with mls yet but is certainly in discussions with mls to sign...i am under the assumption that he wants to be a member of the crew but is waiting until "after" the olympic qualifying to make the decision firm...

Yes it is, and speaking as one of their harshest critics I give them full credit.

HOWEVER let me also point out that a) Marshall was a no brainer. The day it was announced he had signed with MLS some guy from LA started a "Congratulations on Chad Marshall" thread on the Crew boards. The guy was simply the second pick, after Adu. Anybody would have taken him. b) Everyone was stunned that Wingert fell that far. The Crew's people almost broke their legs getting the pick up to the podium. I'm still scratching my head over some teams choices when he was still available. c) The real mystery is not why the Crew filed the discovery on this kid but rather why nobody else did too. A-League ROY, fast and left-footed (and the Crew hasn't had a decent left-side player since - well, since never) He's not in the bag but again, full credit for getting aggressive and going for him.

This stuff proves that they're not entirely brain dead, which is certainly a relief. Now if they'll just explain giving up perfectly good high draft choices for Robin Fraser...

Just spoke with some people at Richmond. He is still with the Kickers and Testo is in the earliest part of discussions with the League.

However, it does seem like his joining MLS is in the works and could come to be true over the next few weeks.

No specific team was mentioned though.

Question #1. Once he is signed by MLS, doesn't he have to go thru some sort of weighted lottery process whereby he gets allocated to the Metrostars?

#2. Does a collection of talent make a soccer team?

    Answers TBD.

Not if a team uses a discovery pick to acquire the player (I believe).

No. See the Crew of 2003.

"D.C., NOT COLUMBUS, LEADS THE WAY WITH FIVE PLAYERS IN CURRENT CAMP: Although incorrectly reported in the U-23 roster release on Jan. 22 that the Columbus Crew lead the roster with five players, it's actually D.C. United who provides almost a quarter of the total players with goalkeeper Doug Warren, defender David Stokes, midfielders Brian Carroll and Bobby Convey, and forward Alecko Eskandarian. The Crew have midfielder Kyle Martino, forward Edson Buddle and recently drafted defenders Chad Marshall and Chris Wingert. The Crew are interested in forward David Testo as a possible Discovery Player, but no contract has been signed nor a loan been arranged with his A-League club."
