I thought JayRockers! had a great idea with this thread last week. Let's try it again this week. What's the word on Terry Vaughn? REFEREE: Terry Vaughn. SAR (bench): Chris Strickland; JAR (opposite): Jose Corro; 4th: Ramon Hernandez MLS Career: 34 games; FC/gm: 31.9; Y/gm: 3.9; R: 11; pens: 10 Games involving Galaxy: P7 W0 L5 T2; FC/gm: 33.7; Y/gm: 3.6; R: 3; pens: 2 Games involving United: P4 W2 L2 T0; FC/gm: 32.8; Y/gm: 4.0; R: 1; pens: 0 http://www.mlsnet.com/games/04/tracker.php?gamename=04102004_DCLA&version=preview&lang=eng
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] I posted this in the pre-game thread, but I'll repost it here. Vaughn did 18 games last year, more than any other ref except Brian Hall. His stats: PK: 5 YC: 71 (3.94/game) RC: 3 (.17/game) Vaughn's DC games last year: DC v. Columbus 6/14 (YC: Petke, Torres) DC v. Colorado 8/13 (YC: Nelsen, Namoff, Curtis) DC v. Metros 10/1 - USOC (YC: Prideaux, Nelsen, Quintanilla. RC: Warren) As for Ruiz, he did four Galaxy games last year, booking Ruiz once (though MLSNet doesn't say what he got carded for). FWIW, Guevara also got booked in that matchup of the two biggest divers in the league.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] The word on Terry Vaughn is, he can't be any worse than Kevin Stott.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] They're two of my favorites. I think he can handle them. At least he won't have any Dema antics to worry about. GO Terry!
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] Is he the one with the white labrador seeing eye dog? I get him confused with the other ref with the German shepard.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] The Gals must not like him - no wins in 7 matches? whoah. I wonder if any team has a worse win/loss record with any ref.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] And the streak continues. Vaughn did a solid job IMOFO. Pretty unobtrusive, stepped up to card when needed. What more could you ask for? Thx, Jay!
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] I thought he did fine... nothing too stupid that he missed, one late tackle on Olsen I thought should have been whistled, but nothing too awful.. Also played a very good advantage as DC attacked after an LA handball...
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] Can't complain about it at all, and that's about all you can ask for. It wasn't Collina-esque, but well done enough.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] He was a real change from Kevin Stott, Terry Vaughn really let the boys play a very physical match, and that suits United's style pretty well, as it turns out. Very smart use of the advantage on the Kirovsky run: let it play out, then blew the whistle. Got out the cards when the boys got too rough. The only call I had any problem with was when Hartmann came out really hard, missed the ball, decked Esky and ... goal kick. I guess he figured neither guy got the ball, so they were both reckless, and no call needed.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] Vaughn called a great match. And he understands what advantage is.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] I was very impressed with Terry Vaughn. He didn't seem to let his calls get in the way of the action. The game was much smoother compared to last week.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] That led right to our goal, right? Good performance by Vaughn.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] My only issue with Vaughn was the play on Moreno by Hartman. I'm not sure Hartman got any of the ball before Jaime was leveled. But all in all a well called match by Mr. Vaughn.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] I agree with you, Chico. Earlier in the day, Beasley got creamed in the penalty area with the keeper or defender not touching the ball. No call. No call last night in a similar circumstance. Calling Oliver Stone, calling Oliver Stone -- was the PK call on Nick last week a topic of direction this week for referees? Let's be consistent, guys. One area I would suggest for improvement would be for Vaughn to sharpen his persistent infringement awareness. GM
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] My only gripe is more about how all officals are calling plays like Ruiz's goal. Why is it that if a defender makes the same move he is called for obstruction but when a forward does he is only called for obstruction 50% of the time, or there abouts? Ruiz had not established postions on Carroll and simply hip checked him off the ball to create space for himself. This is kind of the point I was trying to make last week that in the name of "Stampin Out Ugly Defensive Soccer" forwards are being allowed to get away with more that defenders. I am not surprised or even outraged that Ruiz was not called but it just shows again how it is not a level playing field. For the most part I too thought that Vaughn did a solid job. I also was having flashbacks to last weeks call against Rimando on the Moreno/Hartman play.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] I need to check the Tivo but on watching it live I thought Hartman got a piece of the ball, maybe with his elbow against Jaime. Decent job by Vaughn as he was pretty consistent all night and gave the cards at the time when he needed to keep the match under control.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] Vaughn was the best referee that I have ever seen in MLS. I don't expect any ref to be perfect. I can live with his lack of enforcement of Persistent Infringement on the smelly little punk fish. Otherwise, that was a pretty complete and fair performance. In fact, the whole match was very entertaining (from my most objective perspective). It was a true pleasure to see such creative play, skill, and a solid ref. That game was what we the MLS supporters have been after all along. Cheers, Tim
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] My suggestion to Vaughn encompassed both teams, not just the anchovy. If you look at the box score for Vaughn's previous match, there were two players with four fouls each. Neither of these two players received cards. Victorine had four fouls against us -- no card. Convey was repeatedly fouled, several hard ones too, yet no card for girlies for PI -- Vagenas earned his yellow fair and square! GM
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] The best one can say about a referee - he was not noticed during the match (either by being too active or not active enough). Vaughn didn't take it upon himself to make headlines and called a good game. Of course, there are small situations that could go either way - Namoff's tug on Herzog, Hartman leveling Alecko and then Moreno, etc... - but all in all a good game.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] First, I thought Vaughn did a terrific job and I've enjoyed watching other matches he's worked as well. He's a good role model for other referees I think and he was a wise choice for a spot of the Fifa list this year. I'm a little confused about the idea that a good referee is one you don't notice though. This is mentioned over and over, yet, Collina is often mentioned as the standard when he is a referee that would be impossible to not notice. Collina emphatically stamps his authority on a match and plays a noticeable and active role from start to finish. He's very good at letting the game unfold at his pace and it is almost always clear that he is totally in control of a match. Collina is also a showman. This, along with his demonstative control of matches and penchant for making controvrsial decisions has not won him many fans among Serie A supporters. So my question is, do you really want an invisible referee or do you want one firmly in control? These are not necessarily mutually exclusive I understand, but to maintain control it is necessary for a referee to be a presence on the field. It seems to me that fans are more interested in having a referee maintain obvious control without making what they percieve to be obvious mistakes. This isn't always possible because matches will force referees to make difficult decisions. Since there are fairly minor complaints about the referee Saturday, I thought this would be a good time to pose this question.
Re: Terry Vaughn :: DCU vs LA :: Referee Thread [R] Actually, I hardly notice Collina except to say that he kept a lid on things. My point was in remembering a game one should not immediately think of the referee. Perhaps my phraseology was poor but basically I'm not talking about an "invisible referee" that lets things go, I'm talking about referees who are in control but don't grab headlines for their involvement.
