They were originally the Minneapolis Lakers. Minnesota boarders Lake Superior, one of the Great Lakes.
A bizarre conclusion to draw, when my initial contribution to this thread clearly indicated the opposite.
especially b/c half of you are distorting what the other half say and not understanding each other Seriously, I don't care much, as long as it doesn't have the "USA" in it. That would be ughhh..... I'm cool with "San Diego Chivas" I think it is a little bit of everything... American naming style City/Region representation Chivas brand still foreign (to US) nickname
Echo, Toluca, and Lake Los Angeles are three I can think of off the top of my head. They be man-made, but they're lakes nonetheless. Plus there are plenty in Los Angeles County...
As someone who is definately NOT MLS 3, I'd just like to say that the Armada is definately not in the same class as Burn or Mutiny. Unlike Burn, it actually has a link to San Diego. (I think this is the 50th time I've posted this) It's Naval, It's Spanish, and it has a nice ring to it. Burn sounds like a mistake. Especially since the logo is a frickin' horse. Their logo should be Mr. Burns (with a little motto at the bottom - "Eeeecellent" I like "La Armada".
Chivas will not be a part of the name... The name will start with San Diego. The nickname will probably be chosen by the local community, just like it was in most MLS cities. Here in Chicago, we were presented with a poll with four different possible nicknames and the Fire was the majority choice.
Re: Chivas will not be a part of the name... As much as I want it to be San Diego "Something" (preferably Armada) its going to have Chivas in the name...Garber even already said their team name is Chivas USA...
Trademarks filed on Los Angeles SC and Los Angeles F.C. Potentially massive news regarding the future of Chivas USA, as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office received two trademark applications last month from "Chivas Guadalajara Licensing LLC" out of Carson, California. The trademarks are for two names and logos: Los Angeles SC and Los Angeles F.C. According to public database records from the USPTO, the company applied for separate trademarks on January 17, 2014. http://www.reddit.com/tb/1y4u48
Well, Garber already stated that these logos/trademarks have nothing to do with the current sale. He also shot down the L.A. Gunners as being a replacement for Chivas USA by stating that owners of multiple MLS teams are a thing of the past. Apparently our new logos and colors will be decided after the club is sold.
Whatever it is, don't use the words REAL, Football, United, AC, Sporting or CITY in them. Or any spanish for that matter. City is pretentious as hell. No body in Los Angeles uses "City" except for people that actually work for the city. The "Los Angeles" (Fill in the blank) will be more than fine. Which obviously means it won't happen. Truthfully I will be happy to get any name. It will not be as embarrassing as the garbage we've had to put up with. Legg Lake is by my house.
Couldn't the name "Gunners" run into the same issue that caused the Washington Bullets to become the Washington Wizards?
It probably would and I am sure that Garber wouldn't want to drag the club into any further controversy.
I don't see a problem using Spanish. I think C.D. Los Angeles or C.F. Los Angeles would be fine. Even Real, although not my preference, would at least be more fitting for LA (with the El Camino Real connection) than SLC.

meh, i wouldn't want a Spanish team name. it would give me flashbacks of all that CUSA drama. id prefer a name with reference to the great city of los angeles without the use of a mascot. no mascots, porfa. mascots make things a bit less classy and much more disney/murica. ALTHOUGH, contradicting everything i just said, the LA Black Goats would be pretty tight. Not saying id want it, just saying it'd be tight.
No Spanish names or any names to do with an ethnic group. i.e. LA Aztecs. I hated explaining to people the concept of Chivas USA, mostly because it wasn't made clear by the owners. Explaining to people that I didn't support THE Mexican Chivas was time consuming. Let's get the name right this time. The name has to reflect the city of Los Angeles.
