Maybe this has already been mentioned earlier, but in this interview on the U20 squad, Rongen mentions how it was Berhalter who tipped him off about the existence of Wood at 1860. http://www.ussoccer.com/Multimedia/Media-Center.aspx#/id=cd3e2127-58ca-458d-ab9c-2fa0984632cc
That's weird because Big Soccer knew about him going over on one of the threads posted here years ago.l
Well Berhalter moved away from 1860 in Feb of 2009, so maybe the original tip came a while back. He wasn't specific in the interview.
By the way, 1860 is in serious trouble. They need to raise 8 million Euros in 12 days or they are bankrupt, according to (a Google translation of) kicker. http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/...arm-bei-den-Loewen_Acht-Millionen-fehlen.html
so sad for such a storied club. hopefully they can somehow turn it around but its realistically looking like the clocks about to strike 12 here
Article on Bobby Wood on MLSS. He talks a bit about 1860, living in Germany, his plans for after his contract expires in 2012, etc.
Can anyone tell me what's up with Bobby Wood? He hasn't made the squad for 1860 first team since coming back from the qualifying. Is he injured or what?
He was hurt before U20 qualifying with a bad ankle. He played in U20 qualifying hurt and made it worse.
He could be out for the season. He tore his meniscus at the qualifiers causing him to miss the last game.
I know hindsight is always 20/20 but he really needed to make a sound decision to not come to qualifying if he came into camp with a problem, and if he picked up the problem during camp, he needed to sit. No need putting your career in jeopardy for a U-20 WC Qualifying campaign, especially when on the verge of being a first team regular. Oh well, I'm sure he's heard it more than a few times already. Speedy recovery!
Wood has played 30 minutes of first team soccer. He is nowhere close to establishing himself as a regular.
He made the bench for almost every game between winter break and qualifying. In some senses, that is a "first team regular."
Why did Gyau play with his injury? Why did Rongen say "everyone is 100%"? Why did Agudelo not get called in? There are many questions.
If Kevin Volland joins Hoffenheim for next season, I'd think Wood will be among the players fighting to replace him at FW for 1860.
As I posted last summer, I suspected Wood would make the first team within 12-18 months and he has. He is now ranked as the 3rd or 4th striker behind Lauth and Volland at 1860. Volland is on loan from Hoffenheim (we sold him there last fall) so Wood can expect to see a lot of the pitch this year I suspect. They are now in the training camp in Austria. If he stays healthy he will likely start seeing more time on the pitch as a sub. The coach (Maurer) loves the kid and will likely use him in the 4-2-3-1 as on outside attacking mid or in the 4-4-2 as a recessed AM behind the striker.
