According to Tino Palace, Tommy Smyth will be in the broadcast booth for the next 3 USMNT telecasts: http://www.mlsnet.com/content/03/tcs0515.html
after reading Bill Simmon's column on ESPN Page 2. He just got married, referenced that and his bachelor party in vegas. As he's friends with Rob, and hangs with Jimmy Kimmel. I'd be willing to bet it was Bill Simmon's bachelor party and wedding that Rob went to. In fact i'm pretty sure Rob mentioned that he was going with those guys to the Vegas bash. wow what a great article by Tino btw. its really cool that somebody took the time to break down this situation with so much insight or analysis. absolutely at the right time too. agree with him or not abut his pics this is a pretty interesting and topical issue, and its intersting to read his oppinions on it.
While Tommy S. is good for entertainment value, mentioning him in the same sentence as Dennis Miller - as in, both are good for nothing but entertainment - is absurd. Smyth, love him or hate him, is 10x the expert on soccer than Miller is on football. And I agree with Kenn - let's hope one of the potential new voices is NOT Dave "It's in the net" Johnson.
Tino Palace couldn't write his way out of a paper bag. His column reads like something one would find in a high school newspaper. If he uses the term "Run DMB" one more time, he should be banned from MLS for life.
Irregardless of writing style or ability, I thought this was a good topic. I just wish that the people who make these decisions get a look at his suggestions. BTW, I missed the game on the Deuce last week. How was Ty at PBP? Any worse than his color work?
Just hearing that name puts me off my food. Until a freak scandal forces MSG to fire JP, leaving him to work for ESPN, keep Ty at PBP. Could always do worse.
Ty did a pretty good job at play-by-play. He's not as smooth as Stone, obviously, but he did a good job describing the action and worked well with Dir and Waldo. All in all, I'd rather have Ty doing PBP than Stone in the booth any day of the week.
Ty did not do a good job at PBP last week. He missed call after call on the fouls--Dir had to correct him several times on obvious ones. Get the tape if you don't believe me.
1.I don't know if I enjoyed listening to Ty more than I thought I would because I expected him to be horrible and he was okay, or what, but I thought he did a better job at PBP than a lot of other supposedly full-time PBP guys I've heard in the past. 2.And Dennis Miller knows a hell of a lot more about football than you think, but that wasn't his role on MNF. Even Michaels said he was astounded by the depth of Miller's knowledge of football. But getting Dennis Miller in your booth and then using him as a straight football guy is like having Jennifer Garner come over to your house so she can mow the lawn. 3.When you have the shootout, you get to hear every team's PBP and color guys. It's enlightening. At least one guy I always hear called the best in the league didn't impress me - he's okay, but just average. A couple others are also good, and a couple not-so-good. 4.Bill Simmons will be back in Boston by Christmas, I think. No way Kimmel's show can last.
Why don't you start a site listing the ratings for all of Kimmel's shows so that we can track his level of success, and watch for signs that the show will in fact be canceled? Move Nightline.
I know all about Dennis Miller. He's on the sports radio shows down here in SoCal all the time, waxing poetic on this or that. And no, he doesn't know a hell of a lot more about football than I think.
One thing I noted in the Tino article was the statement by omission when he discussed potential pairings of announcers. In none of his scenarios did he discuss where Ty might fit in. Quite the opposite, in fact. Ty's name suspiciously drops from the list of future potential announcers -- play-by-play or color. Does he know something we don't?
What is the general opinion of Seamus Malin (sp?). I've always enjoyed the matches that he does the color on. He's no-nonsense and focusses on the team's strategy (or lack of) and his comments seem to be right on usually. He doesn't go off on tangents as much as some. He and Tommy are my favorite color guys, though their styles differ. I've always liked JP's pbp better than anyone else.
The Revs color guy at the Wednesday KC - Revs game did a great job I thought. Can't remember the name but a bit easier to understand than the loveable Doug Chapman.
Yea, I think this is the 2nd time I've heard him and both times I've thought he did a good job. The Revs' pbp guy, OTOH, gets on my nerves but maybe that's just me.
Many believe that "Tino Palace" is the nom de plume of some staffer at MLS HQ, and his suggestions for improving MLS -- revised playoff formats, new broadcasting teams, etc -- appear to be trial balloons designed to elicit feedback from the fans.
While I liked Ty as a PBP guy, and was surprised that I did, I also liked the suggestions for broadcast combos made by "Tino Palace." Either way, it wasn't a ringing endorsement of either Ty or Rob Stone and it's not a good harbinger given that it was on an official MLS website. I know they claim the stuff is not reflective of MLS and yada, yada, yada, but it's still pretty telling. While I wouldn't mind more of Ty and PBP, any combination that keeps him from being an "analyst" is fine with me and if that means he's off the air altogether, so be it. As for Stone, he seems like a genuinely nice guy and I know he really bleeds for the sport, but MLS can - and needs to - do better. Here's a suggestion that doesn't cause anyone to currently get fired. Ty to PBP, Waldo in the booth as the analyst and Rob as the sideline guy. This was a role - along with being a studio host - that I thought Stoner always did well at.
While I haven't heard ty's PBP, this sounds like a decent idea. I liked Rob as a sideline guy and in studio too but haven't been much for his work in the booth.
That would be Dave Johnson who does United matches.. If one could simply take away that ridiculous "It's in the net!" goal call (admittedly, he ain't sayin' it much this season so far) and his continued butchering of Ryan Nelsen's last name (for some odd reason he insists on calling him Nillson), Johnson is very good at calling soccer matches.. He is very knowledgable of the game and does not hold back in criticizing players and the team when performing poorly...
