Thread title?? Mason Mount: Erik ten Hag's Man Utd plans were key in £55m transfer from Chelsea https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66063196 https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/official-man-utd-sign-mason-mount-from-chelsea

Lots of variations in how various people think we will deploy Mount. That flexibility is probably one of the main reasons EtH likes him as he can play either side as an #8 and either side as a wing forward. Statman Dave seems to think at the expense of Eriksen, with us moving to 4-3-3 with Cas central #6 behind Bruno #8 & Mount #8 - ie with Bruno left (where he usually drifts) and Mount right supporting Antony. Without Eriksen means Bruno will have to drop deeper in the early phase to do the DLP thing. Others have Mount as left-sided with Shaw / Rashford. We will probably see a variety to be honest, but will be interesting to see where he mainly settles once everyone fit and available. The flexibility will certainly be useful to cover injuries too.
I really like the idea of dual 8s or even moving Bruno a little deeper (because of how much he can still create from deep). I think Mount and Eriksen will play in different types of games. Mount offers elite counter pressing, decent goal threat, decent chance creation. Great for big games. Depending on if we get another DM I could even see us playing with two DMs, Mount as the 10, and Bruno at RW for big away games. Eriksen I think still has his role in games against lesser competition that will sit back. He’s still elite on the ball with his vision and chance creation. He just doesn’t have the legs to handle being pressed or being asked to press against better teams. Rotation will be his best friend. Regardless of how we setup, I won’t feel comfortable with this midfield until we get Casemiro cover. He goes down and we’re totally ********ed.
Agreed. That is why I would do Dave 1 more year and get Lavia. Is Onana really that much better!?! Regarding Mount, I think he will allow us to rotate Bruno and Erikson without missing much. He is also a passing 8 which fits EtH more than a carrier. If we spent less for a guy in his final year, I would feel better about this move.
Yes, he is. At least with how Erik wants to play. But, it doesn't have to be Onana either. It's really important we push the whole team up 5 or 10 yards, keep them compact still and ensure we have key trigger press points. DDG is among the worst GK with the ball in the entire league. He's a turnover machine. And, we're never going to take that next step in controlling a game against a top half team for more than 10 minutes with him.
Onana is 100x better than DDG for how ETH wants to play. He's essentially another CB when in possession. Onana would even make someone like Maguire serviceable at CB due to how much he sweeps up behind a high line, not that I want Maguire on the field for us. But, Onana basically makes us way more press resistant out of the back.
I think Dave is a goner now. If we can't land Onana, we should move on to someone else, but it is possible we still sign Dave back. Lots of talk Lavia will go to Liverpool. I think we miss out on him. Agreed on Mount. Tactically flexible, good passer and threat. But the 7? I'm surprised Bruno didn't ask for it. Maybe there is an expectation he will be very involved in the final third. Ten Hag likes his tens.
I think Erik's ideal is to have him involved in the final by virtue of pushing everyone up more and having him press high, likely on the right side and forcing more turnovers. I think the 7 is more just a thing, but nothing special. Garnacho needs to get established first before concerning himself with a number.
We play with actually wide forwards in our front line. Yes they are dynamic and there's a lot of movement. Overall, Mounts success has been in the halfspace. Not where Rashford, Antony and Sancho have been playing for us. Seeing Mount play on the wing would be a huge disappointment, because it would be that our other 5 wingers arent doing their job. I'd much rather Bruno play wide than Mount. At least Bruno can dribble.
I just dont see how a back 6 of: Onana Dalot Varane Licha Shaw Casemiro is supposed to make us soo much more better in possesion, just because of the goal keeper. Are we going ot bypass midfield? Or are we just going to worry about pressing and defense and transition?
Were u referring to my post? By right side, I mean as part of a MF 3, nominally supporting Antony as our RWF (but drifting into spaces as needed).
Yes, but apparently it's still in the realm of possibility we might sign him back (or so I have read).
He can and has at times for Chelsea, but is mainly an #8 or #10, so dont expect to see him much at wing-forward for us. EtH may find the occasional use for him there in-game, similar to how Bruno isnt a wing-forward but has been put there a few times. Mount delivery from wide areas is actually pretty good, can also see him doing a better job than others of tracking an oppo fullback if that were are priority for specific oppo. Not the norm though.
