Frank Dell'Apa reports in the Globe today that TnT has been named to the USMT for the Confederations Cup. Whenever TnT mentions the USMT, he talks of being a "target man." Apparently that's what the Bruce told TnT he wanted out of him. It's good to see that TnT's great start this season has not been ignored, but what are the Revs going to do without him? I expect a big sendoff for TnT on Saturday, provided the Razor isn't washed away by the coming storm.
It's confirmed, but Taylor will be the only Revs representative going: http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=36491 GK's are Tim Howard, Joe Cannon, and Marcus Hahnemann. The Magpie
In a way, good news for the Revs, the only team in the East with only 1 player going. The West only had 4 total (1 each from KC,LA,SJ and COL, none from DAL), while the East sends 3 each from CHI,CMB and NY and 2 from DC. Biggest surprise (IMHO) is Brian McBride left behind (for Jeff Cunningham no less).
IMO it's worse for the rest of the league...look at Metros who lose Howard, Pope and Mathis, Crew who lose Martino and Cunningham, Chicago who lose Boca, Beas and Armas. Those teams will be more or less gutted, while we lose one guy. I think we can still score goals with Noonan and JMM up top.
Rumor has it McBride asked to be left behind because his wife is due to have their first baby during the time of the tourney. Good news for Twellman and possibly Ralston...but I have to say it's nice to see the team stay somewhat complete for the month.
my question will be what the gold cup team will look like. is the roster going to be perceived "better", "worse", or the "same" as this roster? it sounds as if many of the guys won't be competing in both tourneys. so, does it make more sense to bring a stronger team to the gold cup (that will continually qualify you for the confed cup)?
FYI: Apparently Steve Ralston has been picked as an alternate, so if a midfielder goes down between now and France we should see him there as well. The Magpie
Ok, this is starting to boggle my mind. What does Brown have to do to get on the US roster (besides sitting in a friendly against Mexico). Granted, being a Revs fan I'm biased, but I find it hard to believe that other goalies are making 2-3 fantastic saves a game. Is Cannon even starting at Lens?
i think the bruce has made no secret that he's going to look at up to 100 guys before wcq. did any of us think that taylor would be called back in for anything major after seeing time in january and then almost none since? now, he gets the call up to a tourney? brown will get his chance...i know it. something tells me that in the back of bruce's head he sees the domestics as: 1. howard, 2. brown, 3. rimando.....regardless of who gets called up for certain matches right now. also, i think there are a lot of people that pay attention to the pool of u.s. goalies that like the fact that hahnemann is getting some attention.
Right, especially considering that Howard will be hogging a bulk of the minutes and it makes more sense to have out-of-season Euros on the bench than MLS starters. This decision has no negative bearing on Adin... except, of course, that Arena rates Howard ahead of him (and while some of us might even be tempted to contest that, myself included, it's certainly not outrageous).
i was about to say that. Euro-based keepers are done with their season, so they can sit the bench with Howard starting. Would you rather see Brown sit on the bench or play games for the revs?
A few random thoughts, 1. If we're going to lose Twellman for a stretch, the timing couldn't be better. Colorado/DC/Colorado. I thing we can manage. 2. This might be a great opportunity for Wolde Harris. 3. If memory serves, Arena said that he would give Adin Brown a chance in a cup competition this year. The Gold Cup is still there.(or maybe Adin Brown said Arena said...) And it would be very convenient. Can he do double duty on 7/12? 4.What does this say about how Arena is approaching the Confederations Cup? Looks like he wants to give some new guys a real test.
Actually, TeleFutura and Galavision, with the final on Univision. http://www.soccer365.com/_365_Features/page_121_47008.shtml
The USA is going to take the Gold Cup very seriously, so Friedel will be in net with Keller as a backup if he is healed from his injury. Brown is going to have to wait a bit to see sometime with the Nats.
Not sure if you are being sarcastic, as neither Friedel nor Keller are even on the roster. The general sense I get from reading the USMNT boards is that the only country bringing a large contingent of their European starters is France. Looking at the US team you can see why...everyone is trying to recover from a season - JOB, Sanneh, Keller, Friedel, etc. My sense is that we are taking it as seriously as anyone else...;-)
well, this is the question i was asking a few posts back. since the confed cup is the "end" and the "gold cup" is a "qualifier"....it would make sense they are/would take it seriously. but, are they? and how would you know this already? i vaguely remember some talk about somewhat different squads for these 2 tourneys....so, are there some speculative articles out there i haven't seen?
I can see where Arena wants to look at other keepers in France, while planning to see Adin in front of frenzied Gillette Stadium crowds in June. What a great way to break him in! - HWM
