I have seen only 3 of his outings. The trajectory I saw is upward in all respects. I think his touch and positioning has improved over time, as has his aggression on the ball.
I watched most of the match and thought Tessmann had a positive and impactful match. He was far from flawless, far from great but he was impactful. His play has taken a gigantic leap forward since the Fall. To put it bluntly, he was two steps behind and now he’s a step behind. The anticipation and knowing where to pass and/ore move is his biggest downfall. In the Fall he was two steps behind the play and he looked lost. Now, he’s seeing the play quicker and he’s been able to assert himself on the match, Tessmann is looking for those little pockets to either move or pass into. The game has slowed down. He is now just a step behind. He can get away with it, to a degree, because he’s so athletic but athleticism will get you so far. I can see Tessmann now using his mind more. He’s starting to anticipate instead of just react. It’s all a work in progress for him. I am extremely happy with his progress and quite frankly, very surprised as his rise. My hat goes off to the kid.
I'm still not all that impressed...does alot of chasing the game. IMO, really doesn't do much to make an impact.
That's basically what I said above in some many words. Look, he's a work in progress. No question about that. With that said, Tessmann made big strides in 4 months. Strides that should be applauded. He has a long way to go but I've seen growth. Right now it's not about impressing us; it's about growth.
But he had few minutes in MLS (relatively speaking), and even was playing multiple sports through his teens. It was a huge leap to Serie A, all things considered. Sometimes he is 1 step behind- as M Vann stated- but other times is well within the flow (my assessment). In particular he is learning to use his body really well, and some of his long passing is excellent. If anything, we need to expect less progress, more incremental progress at this point…since he has come so far, so fast.
I never know what to make of firm declarations that this or that very young player starting (or getting significant m8nutes) in a top 5 league is unimpressive.
You have to look at each case. It's never a bad thing but the degree of impressiveness varies when you're dealing with some of these relegation battling teams. I never really thought Indiana Vassilev was on a USMNT pace when he was getting Villa minutes. Same with Khiry Shelton in the Bundesliga. I think Tanner is gonna be good.

He still looks tentative, but he is gaining confidence. He did the same thing at FCD. He could certainly be a good one. People treat American players as less-than over there, and it takes some brash and confident guys to push past that wall. Waiting for Tessman to learn that he is every bit of the athlete needed to knock these Italian midfields around.
