It's odd that people keep talking about Tessman as a 6. He isn't a square up and tackle kinda guy. He looks like it physically but he doesn't play that way.

While I don't think Tanner ends up the starter for Bayern, he looks like he will be an important piece for a decent team.

There are lots of elite talents who can play multiple positions. Many of our very best players play different spots or roles for the USMNT than they do for their clubs. So, I see no reason not to give a shot at the backup role to Musah, McKennie, Busio, Sands, Cardoso, Tessman, Sarge (yes, Sarge) and others who are good solid players — to see if they can defend and not give away the ball over and over and over.

This guy is getting really interesting.

He had a couple donkey touches (including his cross), but he had far more very nice sequences of quick feet (this is surprise!), nice pass combos and even a really nice dribbling sequence with some real creativity.

This kid is improving in (apparently) every way. I hope he can stay there, keep getting significant minutes, keep improving- because the difference between now and start of season is quite stark.

Definitely unorthodox style no doubt about it. Clever/clumsy type feet, non traditional but seems to pull some of it off.

playing at a higher level causes players to improve.

this is why the creation of MLS was so important to the US player pool...it finally gave a large number of american players a decent level to play at.

and this is why getting as many americans into top 5 leagues as possible is only a good thing for the player pool, generally...I think a lot of observers underrate/underestimate the benefit that playing in a top euro league can have to a players level. they generally either say a player is good enough or not...without an acknowledgement of how much the experience in and of itself can impact a players level.

tessman is good. and was good enough to get bought by a serie a team...but it did kinda come outta nowhere...and it will be easy to say that his improvement is due to the fact that he was destined to become that inherently...but i am more of the mind that steel sharpens steel.

I like that he's really starting to show more intensity. He's had these skills when he played at FCD but would kind of just go along at a slower pace. He started off at Venezia doing that too but it picks up week to week. I still think he's only at about 2/3's of where he will end up and when he gets to top speed he will be a McKennie level headache for other teams.

I think it's more that we are desperate for players at the 6. After Adams we don't have any good options there. Acosta has shown to be the best option, but I think everyone's very much looking for someone who can supplant him.

And they always explain why. It is just a difference of opinion about the relative merits of the various options. People seem to hate when that happens.

I don’t know if I saw a representative sample of Nani last season, but he was pretty effective in the matches I saw.

This is it. This is why having several MLS players in the starting lineup for the USMNT would be detrimental. The speed of play is so incredibly slow. You have ages on the ball, there’s very little pressure, and therefore your speed of thought slows down. That can’t happen at the international level, where the space and time on the ball is limited. It’s very hard to flip a switch and all of a sudden play faster when you’re not used to making decisions at that speed.

I see Tessmann is starting, with Busio on the bench, v Empoli at 9:00 AM (eastern).
