Check out the quotes from former "Talon" Peter Lund at the bottom under "Working Conditions" http://msn.espn.go.com/page2/s/hruby/030212.html
This made me think of the mascots forming a union. Then I pictured them out on strike, walking the picket line, in costume of course. hehehe, that makes me chuckle.
I actually met Pete a few times while in DC. He was a very nice and generous person and I hope things are working out better for him now than they were as Talon.
Amen Amen to that! As a former NCAA mascot myself, I can testify to the poor working conditions. I used to sweat off at least 6 pounds of weight each game, and during football games, would have to share a costume with another putrid-smelling person. Changing into costume in the basements of musty stadiums (hope you all have seen the basements in RFK!!) It is a lot of fun, but getting attacked by screaming 6-year-olds can wear on the nerves... Talon deserves the upmost respect for doing his job.
Anybody check out today's Tank McNamara? http://www.ucomics.com/tankmcnamara/2003/02/14/ I tried to post the image but couldn't, maybe because I'm not a premium member. If anyone else can do it, feel free.
That article didn't mention that part of the job. Maybe conditions aren't so bad after all... friggin horny eagles
Life of A Mascot http://espn.go.com/page2/s/hruby/030212.html Sounds like being a macot is a tough job. Not alot of focus on soccer, but the mentions a guy who fomrerly was the DC United Mascot (Talon????) at the end. I'm surprised ESPN even talked to someone who was an MLS mascot. Also there's the one part about a masot being gropped by a guy from Denmark (Ewwwww!!!) outside RFK during the 1994 World Cup.
There's already a current thread on this. "Talon a victim of unfair working conditions?" https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=33375
Please at least make an effort to check the front page of the Board Mistakes happen but this a another repost in a recent string.
the dirty bird... I'd seen this problem before. Typically if there's no ONE person responsible for a mascot, there won't be any maintenance or upkeep done. People would take the suit out of a box when it's needed for an appearance, put it back when they're done. Washing the suit is just not even thought of, the old its-not-my-job thing, and assumed someone else would take care of it. It's sad. Talon was one of the better-looking mascots in pro sports, but I can't imagine how he must smell now. As a freelance mascot performer myself, I know the importance of washing and taking care of my costumes. If I had a character as cool as Talon in my care, he certainly wouldn't acquire such a smell. I gagged when I saw that former Talon only made $40 for an entire game. No wonder the suit smells -- he couldn't afford to clean it on that wage. I would think a professional mascot person (maybe one from King's Dominion) would be worth his/her weight in gold (well, maybe not). Without question, the kids love Talon, and if management wants more families at games, a happy (and clean) Talon is crucial, IMO. As Picard would say, "Make it so!" GM
