What is your issue? This is good news. Of course he could suffer a setback, but if he does come back healthy he could be very helpful.

So where does Tainio fit in once healthy? He's a phenomenal DM at full fitness, but while he provides more offensively than Dax he doesn't quite have the same mobility, and mobility is priority #1 in MLS.

Good news, the man wasn't playing back in his country because always was injured, he come here, this year play two games and die, what you will expect of him, to play against the Spur and sit another six months injured again, better waived him right now that is a chance to do so, because once injured you have to carrier him on the pay roll you like it or not....

Maybe throw him in at CB? Barklage, Conde, Tainio, Pearce?

I think a smart coach will make him come off the bench or start him occasionally for the first month of his recovery to get his feet and fitness under control. Also we shouldn't remove Dax from the DM position and lets just see if Tainio is still the same player once he returns. With Solli, Pearce, Tainio, Marquez(who knows with him) coming back from injury we'll have some scary depth..

We have enough cripples as defenders already, and you want one more?.... The man is 33 years old and a very, very injury prone, that hasn't play more than 20% of his game for more than 5 years, the best move is waive him right now that you have the chance ans sign some body else that at least can have sitting on the bench, ready to sub if it is necessary....

Very cool for him to return against his former team.

He will stay, regardless of Metz's objections for the rest of the season, and we'll see beyond that. Having a player of his quality on the bench is a good problem.

Also, Tainio may be the player we need to make a 4-3-3- work. Our big 3 up front with Dax, Teemu, and either Joel or Solli in the 3 man midfield.

Tainio is quality. Not like Holgersson or Marquez. I would give him a shot at CB.

    Some comments:

    - I agree with koko, Dax ain't leaving the starting lineup. Before this year, I favored a healthy Tainio as the starting DM. But Dax is on a roll, and he should be an automatic starter unless being rested.

    - We have no idea how effective he's going to be. He might have a setback, or be too rusty, or be physically limited. With his injury history, he should be worked back in slowly as sub.

    - Tainio is not playing CB. It's not his position and he is not tall. I see no reason to suspect he'd be preferable to our existing options. Meanwhile, we have no real back up DM. Tainio is far more needed at his actual position.

I think Tainio might be best at Right Back to be honest with you guys. Maybe as a backup but I would get rid of him like Mtez has said. Always going to be re-injured, just giuve him time.

It would be great if we can get him back. I think that as an older injury prone guy, he would be best suited for a bench role with occasional starts here and there. He provides great depth for us at center mid. He's a way better option than Palsson. I think Dax should stay where he is since his play has carried us all season long. He's been one of the MVP's of the team. But he has played almost every minute so he is gonna need some rest down the stretch. And Tainio with all his injury problems you can't really rely on him to be a starter and I don't think he should be. Him and Dax together doesn't work as well as Dax and Lindpere.

And the chance of him playing CB is pretty much 0%.

Maybe in a 4-3-3 you play him in the middle with Dax and Lindpere? Sub-in with Soli and Lade?

    Then where does Rafa play?

To many talented players on this team.

I echo this statement. Dax has been a rock. He's been there all season long. Don't mess with a good thing.

Metz, the rules changed a few years ago. They almost certainly can't just cut Tainio plus that issue was more a contract clause that was in almost every young player contract, but again that is no longer the case. We are still paying his contract which is one of the reasons you just don't cut him. In addition, if he gets back for a couple of games and shows he is healthy, if they want then they can trade him for value instead of cutting him for nothing.

Are "no trade clauses" common in MLS contracts? Is that even a thing in MLS?

When did he go back to Finland? I had to check with YLE and it hasn't made any mention of him playing in Veikkausliiga or even Ykkönen...

In the Montreal post game Backe said Tainio and Cahill would get 45 minutes vs. Spurs.
