At what point are we no longer "abandoning hope?"

    If/when we make the playoffs?

If/when we return to the MLS Cup?

Or should we continue to "abandon hope" as part of lowering expectations and not jinxing ourselves?

I think I need to brush up on my Italian or whatever it is, I don't even know what it means.

    Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate.
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Actually, it's more like at what point do our opponents abandon all hope when playing us.

The dual edged meaning of the quote is why it is so great. Plus in case nobody noticed DC started to turn the season around at about the time that tag line was added...I'd say we keep it as long as we're winning.

I think the tagline sucks, worse one out there. Never figured out the DC/Italy connection. Here's hoping we change it soon.

There is no "connection". It's quoted from Dante's Inferno

It's written above the gates of hell...(or something like that).

It was inspired by a general lack of faith in United.
Internet doomsayers came up with that witty gem.
I can never be accused of that I'm much too delusional for that.

I agree that the dual nature of the tagline is a huge part of its charm and we should leave it alone, at least for the rest of the season.

I liked it and still do, not as a doomsayer, but because it makes sense whether we are good or bad.

When we suck it refers to us...we we don't it refers to our opponent

We should have a huge banner of that at RFK.

Using that tagline makes us all look much smarter than we really are.

You honestly think it's worse than "What's our favorite color? Green. No, Blue! AAAAAAAH!!!"? I think you're full of sh!t.

I find them to be just as funny.

    ;)

I still stand by my point that ours is not even close to the worst tagline, I just didn't feel like copying all the other crappy ones.

    1. Some of the boards are nothing more than name calling and slander (at least we intersperse our's with some content and insight now and then). Even opposing fans have to admit we have a lot of content and interaction. So raising the bar and having a tagline that actually aspires to some level of intellect beyond that of a dead snail ain't such a bad thing.

    2. I too like the double-edged nature of this. After a big loss, it can be a reflection of our collective pain and dispair, or on a winning streak and success it can be a message to opponents. Heck, it's even a statement about the addictive nature of participation in BS and the love we all feel for DCU.

    3. There is something about streaks and luck and jinxes. I'm not supersitious (not that there's anything wrong with that) but I don't see making any kind of change while the team is improving.

    4. And yes, Monty Python can be pretty intelligent and insightful about the human condition. But tag lines in foreign languages have the benefit of confusing non-DCU fans: so we'd need to find something from the Pythons that isn't in English or Australian.

    if you change the tagline...

    I suggest
"Once and Future MLS & Open Cup Champions"

or, wait until the end of the season and its
"Your MLS and Open Cup Champions
(If you don't like it, Eat It) "

    or perhaps,
    THE LARCH

We're not changing the tagline until after the season as I'm still recovering from the stress of the last change.

I'm looking forward to the day when I can propose "Much Adu at DCU". :)

Agree with Knave - changing taglines is the kind of thing you do in the off season when nothing is happening. My suggestion would be to feed the current line into that computer program that gives you every possible anagram, then choose from what you get. (Just to be extra obscure.)

    agreed

Unless your thamlin18, chico13 or any of the big soccer inner circle, you have no idea what it means.

We have guys on our team with connections to Holland, New Zealand, El Salvador, Bolivia, Phillipines, etc. - why an Italian tagline?

Why a despairing one? We're on fire lately!
