Certainly has the experience to pass on to younger players. And the player coach thing worked out so well with Zenga...

Ramos had one problem when he played which has to do with coaching. As a player I heard he would not give the young player the time of day when it came to helping a young players game. Not a good way to be if you want to coach.

On the other hand I heard Donodoni was great with the young players.

I do think if Ramos was the coach we would most likely have a fantastic inside short passing game. I would think he would try to fill the team with quick skilful players who were brought up on this kind of game. That would be fun to watch.

Thats probably why Donadoni started his head coaching career last year with Lecco in one of the Serie C's and is now coaching Livorno, a club that is a bit higher in the pecking order and is in Serie B. It would be great to get him back here to coach, but it probably wouldn't happen.

    Donadoni as coach

I believe that the Metrostars would make the best choice trying their best getting Donadoni here to coach. He is coaching In Italy in the lower divisions. I guearantee he would emphasize defensive organization and would have the respect of the players, where OZ doesn't seem to have. Just my 2 cents.

I see Ramos coaching St. Benedicts more than I could see him coaching the Metros. Not that they need a new coach.

Poor OZ. Even his seclusion play didn't work. The guys still couldn't score at home. They looked frustrated in every sense of the word, and I'm sure they were.

"It would be great to get him back here to coach, but it probably wouldn't happen."

I think there is a chance at some point in time because the Metrostars actually pay coaches on a pretty good scale. We have paid coaches 500 thousand a year to coach plus other perks.

I think Donadoni knows that he is liked in NY/NJ area, and that he would be welcomed back with open arms. Plus the club knows that if they get him back a lot more people of Italian decent may come to the games.

Also if Donadoni comes to coach here our foreign allocations might change from being Colombian to Italian. I am a little tired of Colombian players.

I don't think it is good to take an inexperienced coach and put him into the Metros mess. It will take an excellent psychologist and strategist to organize an effective team. Just taking a player who hangs up his jock and giving him the job for sentimental reasons is a sure recipe for disaster. The position needs an experienced professional coach who has proven he can do the job. Especially one who has proven that he can win with limited talent. Having been a great player is irrelevant, just look at Bruce Arena.

How many guys out there fit that description and are available? Maybe just a few. Unfortunately I cannot give a whole list. I can only mention one guy who I think can do it, but I am sure there are others.

That is Paul Reilly. 2000 A-league coach of the year, and current coach of D-3 pro champions Long Island RoughRiders. He is the coach who recently brought Edson Buddle along. When he played, he was captain of a group that included Meola, Armas, Rooney and Savarese. He is a leader and a professional.

Normally i would agree that a former player needs yrs under his belt to coach this team.

I think eventually if not a lot sooner Donadondi would be the right choice.

Remember Beckenbauer took over the German National team and won the WC. He did not even have any kind of coaching license at all when he did that.

"That is Paul Reilly. 2000 A-league coach of the year, and current coach of D-3 pro champions Long Island RoughRiders."

I know Reilly we might be better off bringing back Mondelo then going with Reilly. Reilly is the type that will do major house cleaning get rid of any player here that does not fit into what he thinks the right player at the position would be. He did that as a college coach.

Your assessment that Donadoni is an inexperienced coach is totally wrong. First off, the year after he left the MetroStars, Fabio Capello offerred him a role as his assistant at Roma. Donadoni turned it down. Second, I remember reading that in his second year here at the MetroStars, Donadoni was VERY involved in the coaching aspect of the team, he even was at the draft helping to select players. he took a lot of young players under his wing that year. Third, he spent all of last season as a head coach in Lecco in Serie C/2. Fourth, he obviously did quite well, because he left Lecco, jumped up to Serie B to take over at last years Serie C/1 champions Livorno. We'll see how he does this year in Serie B with a newly promoted side. The reason I said he probably wouldn't come here is, with his rising reputation in Italy, why would he come to America? He is obviously looking to take a coaching position in Serie A.

So OZ is great with young players and at helping improve skills......but terrible at identifying the right player for each position, starting lineup, and subs. That sounds like a really good ASSISTANT coach.

Tab is not good with young players but great at tactics.....sounds like HEAD coach.

I don't know who the right person is for our Metros Head Coach, but it sure doesn't seem to be OZ.

My vote for Shep. He knows the game well and I suspect he would be a first class motivator, something the Metros need badly.
