Steve Donner the CEO of the Rhinos was on the radio post game show tonight complimenting Syracuse on the job they have done drawing nearly 20,000 in 2 games.

He said Syracuse is obviously trying to use the Rhinos template for success and so far it's working. He said the rest of the A-League should take note on how its done. He said it's not a difficult formula.

I hope the blaring jock rock and annoying announcer aren't a part of the formula. I was cringing as I heard the noise in the background in Syracuse which NEVER stopped, and I'm sure is very effective at squelching any crowd noise.

What's the formula? If it's that simple it should be passed around the League. A-League attendance is a real problem and needs attention yesterday.

    attendance

it was more like 14k in 2 games for the pups. Thats not bad compared to most other a-league cities, but after that 10k on opening night [first game ever], they dropped to 4k the next game. The announced crowd of 8k was garbage, i was there with my stampede boys, and that stadium was at least half empty.

    Re: attendance

Let see. by my math if you add 10,721 and 8,057 you get 18,778. that seems closer to 20,000 than 14,000. And i was also at the stadium that night and there were probably 7,500 in the 11,000 seat stadium. I was also at the game in rochester the next night when they announced a crowd of 8,500 and there were probably just over 2,000 people there.

When you hear an announced ticket number you have to remember that it is based on ticket sales, not on how many people acctually go to the game.

    Oh, the bickering...

Syracuse has had a great start. I hope they can keep it up, and even if they fall off to an average of around 5k per game, they'd still be one of the stronger A League teams. Let's hope there's a good rivalry brewing.

unfortunately I believe the next 2 Syracuse FC 'home' games are being played at Liverpool High School (my alma mater) which does not hold too many fans at all (this is due to schedule conflicts with the baseball team). I am not sure how the logistics will work.

I have a question for the people from Syracuse.

How did your city respond to the Nat's succes in the World Cup?

The reason I ask is, I think that would be a good barometer to test if Syracuse can emulate Rochester.

The people of Rochester are quite simply soccer fans, and have been for quite some time. If there is not that type of dedication to the sport in Syracuse, then I believe the Rochester model is a terrible model to follow.

Watching a soccer game in a stadium designed for Minor League Baseball is not a great experience. Having some old 80's bands play is not going to fill that kind of stadium game in and game out. From the little I have heard, Syracuse is depending on big attendence numbers to cover much higher than average A-League costs.

Maybe with Rochester's help, Syracuse can make this work, but I am still not convinced it will, in spite of the attendence for the opener.

Are all soocer moms in Syracuse as whiny as the ones in over on the Syracuse discussion board? Aww the drums and horns made the children cry. Where do they think they are a sporting event or a childs daycare?

I think they should have it all their own way. Soccermoms tend to be like that. :(

    An awesome rebuttal:

    Soccermom:
They don't sell drums or horns at the stadium. One could understand that to mean that they are not appreciated there

    Fan:
They don't sell children there either, so apparently one could understand THAT to mean that they aren't appreciated there either. What's your point?

    This one's even better:

"I think it's pretty clear that you have no respect for the younger generation, yet you expect them to respect you simply because you're "older". Just remember who's going to be paying for your twilight years, it sure won't be you."

What is the population number that each has to draw from?

    North Syracuse
    Metro population

    Rochester 1,198,000
    Syracuse 740,000

Syracuse is at a big disadvantage. I think Rochester also attracts fans from Buffalo (which is over a million metro).
