Final score against Ireland: 5-0 to Sweden, with 2 goals from Karolina Westberg and 1 each by Victoria Svensson, Josefine Öqvist and Lotta Schelin. That means that Sweden have now made it through to the European Championship finals next year.
Oh and two goals by the pariah Westberg. Her first two in the NT. Pretty damn decent work for a defender. Although, the back four were shooting like crazy all of them yesterday.
Surely, surely Dennerby has to keep Westberg on after that. Yes I know, "it's only Ireland"... still. Emma Byrne is no slouch.
Centre defenders are very rarely picked for their ability to score. And if they were, all Karro's competitors have a better goals/match ratio than she has.
Well, okay, fair enough, but why has she become a pariah? I honestly don't understand. Like I have said elsewhere, in my opinion she was clearly the best defender Sweden had in the WWC... at least, when she finally went in... Okay, I suppose you could argue that by the third game of round play, she had had a nice rest while the others were undoubtedly more tired out. But it's only 10 months later, and has that made such a difference?
Dennerby is pretty much looking at Larsson, Rohlin, Segerström and Westberg for the two positions in centre defense. He says it's a close race, and Karro agrees that the competition is hard. I shouldn't go too far back here, but Karro lost her starting position years ago, when she moved to Umeå and was kept on the bench the entire first season for her new club. This was sort of good for the national team, since it allowed other players to emerge. The reasons for not picking Karro has mostly been about style of play. Last year, Dennerby was reluctant to play Westberg together with Marklund - they looked too much like each other in the way they played. He preferred to pair up Marklund with a tall player with a good head (often Segerström). I can see the sense in that, even if it depends a little on who they are playing. Important against USA, not so much against Korea. After Marklund, it seems like Dennerby prefers to fill both the positions in the centre with tall players that are good headers. To me that looks like a centre defense with the job description to "get the ball out of there!" while playing it forward is more a task for the full-backs. So Westberg for instance being a better passing player than her competitors doesn't really help her that much.
she's Sweden best goalie......; after this one http://svt.se/svt/road/Classic/shared/mediacenter/index.jsp?hastested=true&a=830453&haswm=true&hasrp=false see the movie!!!
I'm afraid I have to disagree, slighly. Against Frankfurt her defensive work was sloppy, making bad calls on when to follow and when to cover and simply losing her player. Her speed usually helps her clean up her own messes, but against Frankfurt it was costly. OF course, had Ramona Bachmann done _any_ defensive work in those two games, maybe the situations wouldn't have occurred.
everybçody makes mistakes come one and rtamona is still young and will; learn she has expiernce players like westberg and Ljungberg to learn from
Yes, I suppose I understand the tactics, and I agree with you of course about different defenders being better suited for different opponents. But there's one important fact* left out here: Westberg is a better defender than several of those mentioned. In an all around sort of way. Anyhow, after a decent showing against the US, it sounds like she's on the team now, and may see some playing time against more ground-based teams. *by "important fact" I mean "my own dearly held belief," of course.
I think that Sweden can take a bronze medal in the forthcoming tournament. Would be a nice end of international careers for Victoria Svensson and Hanna Ljungberg, but Hanna probably plays on and on and on. Svensson has declared that she will stop playing internationals after this year. The star of the Swedish team is definitely Lotta Schelin . She is one of the best forwards in the world and I hope she continues playing like she did in that last WC-match against North Korea 2007.
Hanna always said she will at least play for Sweden until Euro 2009 Hey they can win more then bronze alone remember the dificult start for the Germans and Sweden has the easiest group bud they still have to play http://www.hannaljungberg.tk visit this site
