"Just when it appeared San Jose Earthquakes forward Brian Ching was nearing full fitness and could be back in action regularly for the club, it has been revealed that he will undergo surgery to repair a torn right hamstring on Thursday. An MRI examination Tuesday revealed the tear and the Hawaii native is expected to miss an extended period of time. "

This is not good news. :(

Does anyone know what might be the definition of "extended period of time"?

Today's Merc says he might be back before the end of the season.

The article also says that James Twellman is out for the season, maybe Dom can put him on IR and bring in another forward.

Yeah, but James occupies dev. roster spot.
Unless Aloisi is moved from Senior to dev. roster, the potential replacement will be a developmental one as well.
There's also a limit (I think it is 3) of how many players can be on IR at the same time.

Yes, I know, this is a problem, would Aloisi have to take a pay cut for this?

If not, we can cut him -so he will be available for Metrostars.

I really doubt that this is going to cause a roster move to be made. Dom seems relatively happy with Cerritos and Moreno, Nash has looked like a solid contributer off the bench, and we have a number of midfielders that can do passable impressions of forwards. On top of that, if we want another body up top, we can recall Levesque.

I feel bad for Brian and worse for the team.

Is the Earthquakes middle name "adversity" or what?

In one of the articles I saw in the last 24 hours, Dom was specifically asked about recallilng Levesque. He said he would not recall him, even with losing Ching.

I asked him about it last night at AA (Autograph Alley, of course). He seemed pretty grim--I mean, he just seemed pretty depressed, period. He's spent way too much time being injured.

Twellman looked fine--not hobbling at all.

Wow, interesting, the article said Twellman had a torn ACL.

He does. Didn't see him last night, assume if he "looked fine" it was just because he wasn't moving around too much.

On a more positive note, Waibel was out signing autographs last night. He was walking without crutches, which is a good sign. Just a week and a half ago, he was at the SJ/RSL Reserve game on crutches with a knee twice the size of normal.

Without crutches, and with hair. He (unlike Brian) seemed pretty upbeat, and said that as long as the defense continued to do its job, being injured was bearable. Whereas seeing Brian so miserable made me want to cry.

I was surprised to see Twellman as I'd read about the ACL, but he was wearing long pants, and my oldest son (who was in a class with him in college) confirmed that it was James.

[edited to add further albeit unnecessary note: both older kids thought it was James, but #1 son now says he didn't recognize him from school "it was a lecture class" and no one seems to remember whether or not he was limping. I give up.]

Yeah, they announced that James was coming out and I asked April if that was true. She wasn't sure. But they did announce Cowboy on the 25th and he wasn't even there. So who knows. I did not see Twellman though. But I didn't hang around the whole time. Most of it though.

When I had an ACL tear, walking around was no problem (after the swelling subsided). But when I tried to do anything more active than walking around, my knee would buckle (and swell up again).

And when your hamstring is screwed up, you can walk around fine; it's running or trying to kick that is impossible.
