Hey, I was thinking that maybe we should start brainstorming on possible names and logos for a supporters group for the team.

I was thinking maybe trying to incoporate some french military history into the name. There was an Order of Saint Louis from 1693-1792. Here is a picture of the badge.

There were three levels in the order, chevalier, commandeur and grand-croix (cross).

Chevaliers wouldn't be bad, but it needs something else.

My first idea is Louis' Legionaires

I made a mock up of a logo using the Order of Saint Louis badge as a basis.

    What do you think?

Another idea I had was to use Sport Billy's idea of the charging Saint Louis on Horse back as the group logo.

I want to hear more ideas.

I think it would be great if we could get organized like the Sons of Ben in Philadelphia.

Thanks for the kind words. Not knowing much local history, I don't feel fit to offer name suggestions. But I would offer this advice; when designing the logo and name, make sure they will fit no matter what color scheme or team name happens when you guys get a team.

KD - you beat me too it. I've been speaking to Bryan (of Sons of Ben fame) and McGinty about this very thing.

The guys in Philly are great - they have made it clear that the are willing to help anytime we need them.

The only reason I haven't posted is exactly what Brian cautions us about.
The Sons of Ben is a great name for a Philly supporters group regardless of the eventual team name. Also they used the colors from the Philly flag, so that works regardless of team color.

For us, it is a little different. You can go so many ways with St. Louis IX. We will just have to get together and decide on this.

As far as color, our flag is red, yellow, blue - but as we have discussed many times, those colors are way over used. I thought about going black, but I think you want a color that would stand out as a group in a stadium.

For the time being, I think people should just kind of think out loud on here for a while regarding colors and names. I think the hard work that goes into logos could be put off until we get the other decisions narrowed down. (although I am partial to the charging St. Louis.) ;)

BTW, please support Sons of Ben anyway you guys can. They are making a great effort and are great for the sport.

I know its silly, but the problem I have with Legionaires is that the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word is the disease.

I'm thinking Royalty - St. Louis was King so it works regardless of the team name.
So off the top of my head:
Kings, Kingsmen, Loyalists, Crusaders, House of Capet (St. Louis' Family), The Royal Subjects etc.

We could go with purple - color of royalty - it would stand out in the crowd.

I don't know we could also do something with 1809 - year legally incorporated.

Considering Bryan's advice I decided to go in a historical direction.

    "Corps 1804"

It references the Lewis and Clark expedition called Corps of Discovery and the year they started 1804.

    Logo is below.

I think this is pretty universal for the whole Metro area and we can change the colors of this logo to fit the team when that is decided.

    What do you think guys?

SLU's soccer supporters call themselves Legion 1818, so using any form of "legion" might be a bad idea.

(1818 is when SLU was founded, btw.)

Just off the top of my head, as the "Gateway to the West," the idea of calling ourselves the GATEKEEPERS to mind. It has a city tie-in, as well as a soccer-related play on words by incorporating "keepers."

Would be great too if we had a section behind a goal that wrapped around to one corner where the tunnel is, allowing us to make a ton of noise when the teams enter the field.

Like i said, just off the top of my head. I have no idea if I like it or hate it myself.

The Huck Finns - use the legacy of the river and a great American writer.

Font used in suggested wordmark is Carnevalee Freakshow, a free font on dafont.com

For a logo pic if needed I was thinking a paddlewheel boat or Mark Twain's mustache

We've been messing with the "knights" idea for some time.

It fits regardless of the team name.

    So, presenting:

    Knights of St. Louis

yes - it is comprised of stolen images and merged together - don't tell anyone

I'd go with green. It's gonna be damn tough to get people to rally around purple. And simplify the knight, while still retaining the Saint Louis statue feel.

Going back to the original post, how about "Order of St. Louis." It's nice simple, has a ring to it, and also has history behind it.

The Cauldron....that place looked like a Harry Potter convention at the only Wizards game I went to. No offense McGinty, I can't help ragging on KC(despite their record).

I like the Order of St. Louis, sounds official and prestigeous. If we were named just AC St. Louis (or something euro) I would love the Knights of St. Louis. And, if we were named the St. Louis Knights, we would become the Knights of the Round Table and quote Monty Python. Less prestigeous, more minstrels.

The only idea that started in my head had to do with the Missouri Athletic Club. Except the St. Louis Athletic Supporters has a strange crest in my head.....

Do you want official sounding for supporters or something edgier or more fun?

I like Order of St. Louis.

Another idea I had was to use "Arch" in the name.

    Archrivals
    Arch Enemies
    Arch Nemesis
    etc.

Maybe a generic comic book villain type for the mascot and on the logo.

With the proximity of the Mississippi, how about the "Chain Gang", in honor of the Chain of Rocks Bridge? Another idea I was kicking around was the "Melting Pot" which could be symbolic of St. Louis' French roots, Spanish and English occupation, then Irish, Italian, German and now Croatian and Bosnian immigrants? As a former slave state, there's a strong African tie-in for St. Louis too (even though the stadium seems destined to be placed in SW Illinois).

Do you have a site for that - not challenging - just wondering.

Purple has been a royal color since Roman times when the upper class wore it (I know that's not French)
The House of Capet (Louis IX's family) used blue with gold fluer de lis
The last Monarch of France was Napolian III of the House of Bonaparte
I thought the Bonapartes used yellow and red.

I could easily be wrong - does anyone know?

Coopers group is St. Louis United Soccer
    We have Union Centre downtown
St. Louis has always been a labor stronghold

What about the St. Louis Union for a supporter group name?
