I think it's dumb, but I'm not going to say no. Do what you want.

I personally think it is a great idea. You should bring it to all home games too.

come on. you are capable of so much better. i know you can be witty, let's see it. "that's dumb" just doesn't cut it.

this is what it looks like and it caught my eye because it looks like a scarf.

Whatever, dude, I work for the same organization you're about to join. Badmouthing your employer doesn't get you very far.

However, I do think that such a gesture is cliched, and pretty much pointless. People in this country only "Support the Troops" when their chief executive tells them to. The rest of the time they're generally not even aware of the sorts of activities that are being carried on either in their name or for their benefit.

We haven't had a part time military in more than 50 years, but we haven't had full time support in that entire time.

I'm firmly pro supporting our team. Can't and won't try to get in the way of anyone who wants to do this but we should be there for the club first.

Agreed. It's one thing to bring your country's flag to a game, but sports and politics or religion rarely mix gracefully, as anyone who has seen a Lazio home game can affirm. I wouldn't bring a Republican Party sign or an pro-choice sign to a soccer game and I personally wouldn't bring a war banner either.

Still, if some folks want to bring one, they can do it as long as the Fire and NCC have no problem with it.

Personal opinion: Sports are not politics. Sports are for forgetting your daily troubles and having a good time. If you want to support the troops some things you can do are; give blood, join the armed forces, write a letter to someone overseas, do some volunteer work at a local base. There is much more. It's a nice thought, but I don't see Fire games as the time or the place for such displays.

Besides, USMC should be on the top of the banner not the bottom! :p

Pretty sure this is being suggested for the KC roadtrip.

That being the case, supporters of gay rights better leave their rainbow flags at home for this one, less the be taken for KC fans.

I tend to agree with FireAnt. All this "Support Our Troops" business during wartime has about the same level of meaning as all the yahoos flying flags from houses and cars; it is the LEAST you can do. I mean the very least effort possible and the least meaningful thing one can do.

But whatever makes you happy. Just don't expect universal pats on the back. Especially BS member, Unviversal. ;)

In which case, they can do so as long as Lamar Hunt has no problem with it.

Does Lamar have a son named Mike? ;)

    Has anyone seen Mike Hunt?

Sorry. I know that was bad, but how long has it been since you heard a Porky's reference?

    Cam,

Maybe you could find a more "creative" way to support the troops. I've always found it helps to bake a patriotic cake or wear red, white and blue socks or something that's more personal than such a big sign.

Still, that banner is pretty sweet.... do it!

Maybe you could get a tattoo that says something like "death before dishonor" that way no one would have to be worried about mixing nationalist patriotism with a road trip.

There's always the 'do a fellow serviceman' option. Of course, I'd require a servicewoman... :D

I'm not quite sure those type of servicewomen exist...sorry! :p

A friend of mine, and fellow fire fan, is on a ship right now. If you all want to support a troop, write this chick a letter. PM me for her address.

ehhh... I go to matches to get away from all this crap going on. I mean, I've got several friends over there in combat and all that and I definently am pulling for them. However, personally, I'd like to keep soccer and war separate for now. I think its a bit much when either side of the argument uses soccer matches for that kind of thing.

That said though (and this is the important part), I will not stand in the way of anyone who wants to do this. I'm just saying that I personally would not.

You should do something for the Troops

Some of us Galaxy fans sent Galaxy scarfs to some of our fans overseas, if you really want to support the troops, send something to the TROOPS. They probably are not watching MLS games right now so you should probably spend your sign money on sending them Fire scarfs.

Just my humble pinko "Left Coast" opinion.

Re: You should do something for the Troops

I'm sending my friend a Section 8 Shirt, a program from the game, some pocket schedules, and pictures I took at the game.

She's so unbelievably happy about that.

    Thanks for sending your scarves.

The sign isn't going to do any harm. Maybe it's not as good as sending scarves or letters to the troops overseas, or doing anything remotely close to actually supporting the troops, but it's not going to hurt anyone. Rather than having an empty, sign-less section in the stands, why not put up a "support the troops" sign? It's totally sweet and this is Cam's last game before he becomes one of the troops (technically a "swabby").

Also it might intimidate the KC fans and make them feel unpatriotic... or at least notify the average KC citizen that there is a war going on in the world at large.

ps- instead of getting a patriotic tattoo, wouldn't it be better to show your nationalist pride by getting an ankle tattoo of your favorite record label? Just a hypothetical thought
