Mods- I hope I put this in the right place. I though team forums would be appropriate since the new facility could be shared by DC United.

There is currently a proposal to build a new sports complex with 9 soccer fields at Quinn Farm Park in Fairfax County. (See Washington Post Article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A26627-2002Sep16.html )

DC united had proposed to develop two of the feilds as a practice facility and 7 of the fields would be for the public.

It would be really cool to have DC united Practice here in Fairfax County.

Also, I'm sure the BS posters who live in the North VA area and play soccer know that fields in Fairfax County are crowded and fill up pretty quickly and that we could definitely use more soccer fields in the area. It's even hard to find an empty field to practice on sometimes.

-Info on Sports Complex: http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/parks/gmp/quinnfarmreport.pdf (The pdf is large so be patient)

So if your are a fairfax county resident and a DC United Supporter - show your support for the proposed facility by contacting the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors (See Below).

Please feel free to share this with anyone you know who supports soccer in the area.

To Contact the Board of Supervisors:

Below is a draft statement to be sent by e-mail to:
    Chairman Kate Hanley (e-mail http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/gov/bos/chair/feedback.htm) ;
    Michael Frey (e-mail: provdist@fairfaxcounty.gov); and
Lynn Tadlock at the Park Authority (e-mail: lynn.tadlock@fairfaxcounty.gov).

    Draft:

I, , resident of Fairfax County, hereby support the proposal for nine (9) soccer fields on the Quinn Property.

Make sure to include your full name and address in case they want to respond.

Plus it shows them that you live in Fairfax County and you decide if they keep their job or not.

I work in a Congressional office, and if you don't live in our district, we don't care. These people no doubt feel the same way.

Thanks for the link! I finally get to write a soccer-supporting letter for a jurisdiction I actually live in. Here's what I wrote... if you like it, use it, but don't copy too blatantly or we'll lose cred.

"I think the idea of a soccer complex at Quinn Farm is a great one. I've been up to the complex in Germanown several times and think it's wonderful, (if a bit large.) It gives kids a safe place to improve their fitness and build team spirit. I've heard that some people are not very enthusiastic about the fields..., they worry about noise, lights, traffic and lower property values. These are valid concerns, and as a homeowner (though not a $700,000 home,) I understood their fears. Then I looked at a map and realized that neighborhood's proximity to Dulles Airport obviates their concerns.
    1. Noise -- Even the most enthusiastic kids' soccer game has no chance of being louder than a jet airplane taking off or reversing its thrusters to stop upon landing.
    2. Lights -- Simply mandating that all night games finish by 9PM will ease concerns about light pollution.
    3. Traffic -- Recreational soccer games generate no more than 50 cars per game (20 players per team plus officials,) and the DC United team generally has 15-20 players at a practice plus coaches, trainers, etc. no more than 40 cars per session. Indeed, the team practices on weekdays in the mid-morning, hardly a time for concern to the residents. Traffic lights with "trips" would be a must to make sure noone is inconvenienced.
    4. Property Values -- If planned "green," and with some of the park-like amenities I enjoy as a Reston resident, i.e. woodsy walking & biking paths, tennis courts, fitness trails and lots of trees left standing; the soccer fields will actually increase property values. In addition, it will prevent the land from being developed in a less desireable way at a later date. One only has to travel a short distance down Rt. 28 to Prince William to see how we don't want this area to grow.
In short, a soccer complex like the one proposed would be a fantastic addition to our county, and as a happy resident, I strongly support the proposal and anyone who works to accomplish it."

did I lay it on a little thick?

I'm still mystified as to why someone who wants to retain their property value would be opposed to what amounts to a permanent green space nearby. Considering what developers are throwing up in that area (strip malls, industrial parks, etc.), I'd be thrilled with a soccer park.

That woman should open up another can of cake frosting, get a spoon, and go back to watching Oprah and Dr. Phil.

I have a friend who works for VYSA and we talked about Quinn Farm Park and other sites like Lorton and basically she said that the 7 fields that would be open to the public will basic do nothing to help ease the field shortage problem in the area. The real support is being thrown toward something more like the Germantown complex with 20+ fields, that would be able to server a broad range of constituencies including the youth and adult soccer players. I know that the big thing is DC having their own training facility but the 7 open fields will probably cause more trouble in terms of clubs and leagues fighting over them.

Focusing on retaining property values is always a strong argument.

If anybody can provide evidence to show an increase in the property values of those townhouse developments around the Gaithersburg soccerplex, this would truly be a persuasive argument.

I don't know where you would get such information (realtors?), but it would be something that they would read and pay attention to.

Too true. I would agree that we need a soccer complex like in Germantown and that 7 more public fields aren't enough. But I think you have to start somewhere.

Do you have info on the proposal for the large complex? I wouldn't mind throwing my voice behind a 20+ field complex here in VA.

Someone should look up the articles on the Chicago Fire and their experience w/ the Naperville community. There are tons of articles about how well the Fire have accomodated the community. It's a love fest according to the newspaper articles... I saw them on the Fire board somewhere.
