Neste último certame participam, para além das duas formações já referidas, o Sporting e o Middlesbrough, de Inglaterra. That it is...but it doesn't look as good when it is empty... Which is usualy the case... Where is Farense? Why doesn't this team have any money...the Algarve is one of the leading tourist attractions in Europe...thousands of British tourists...Algarve United is a new team and Farense can't get it's act together...
If i am not mistaken Farense was relegated again, now they will start the 2005/2006 season on the Algarve first regional league...
Yes, the Algarve is beautiful and there are a lot of tourists. But the tourists are there in the summer time, when there is no soccer. Farense, much like many other teams in Portugal, survived for many years on subsidies from the local gov't. in Faro. Once they were cut off, it's been all down hill. They were relegated to the Algarve district league this season, but I think they are going to stay up in the 3rd division on a technicality. Algarve United still has another 4-5 years before they'll even come close to getting to the SuperLiga. It's a nice idea, but I doubt a team that new is attracting any fans just yet. Olhanense and Portimonense are the Algarve teams closest to getting into the SuperLiga. Both teams are located in major Algarve cities (Portimao & Olhao), have a soccer tradition, and a dedicated fan base. From what I hear, their derby games draw a good crowd.
it was a good decision by the FPF to have the SuperCup in a different location each year. It still draws a very good crowd. Two years ago I went to the SuperCup in the new Guimaraes stadium for Porto-U. Leiria. Packed house and plenty of excitement. Next year they should do Braga for example and the year after Aveiro etc...
Agreed - I've always hoped that they would try and hold it here in the states one year, either at Giants Stadium or at the Razor (Gillette Stadium). I believe they held it twice in Paris during the 90s.
While that sounds like a good idea, I don't like it...I went to the Italian SuperCup at Giants Stadium last time it was here in NJ and it just isn't the same...the claques are not present and the crowd is sort of "Vanilla"...i.e. no emotion... I am not sure that they should move the game around either...I am a tradionalist...much like the Taca de Portugal should be at the Jamor so should the Super Taca... But I do understand why they move it around....
Imagine a Benfica-Porto SuperCup @ Giants Stadium! I could care less about the claques not making it to this game, Portugal could live without a SuperCup in their territory for one year. Guaranteed a crowd of 50,000 at the stadium, people would come from Massachussets, PA, NY, NJ, Virginia and even Canada I'm sure. Instant success ($$$). They should really consider it...
Would be nice to see, but It won't happen...The Portuguese will never pay the fees and expenses associated with something like this...not to mention who want's to pay $80.00 for a ticket to a meaningless game...
