Paul Gardner. Nothing more has to be said.

Arguing with a "W". If the team wins, the coach did the right moves. Particularly in a game that determines whether or not you make the playoffs.

OTOH, Backe is substitute challenged. He is what he is.

But even so, this sub made sense as a standard time wasting tactic used world-wide. You make substitutions in injury time to run time off the clock, and give your defenders a breather. And you substitute out the guy playing on the other side of the pitch to waste the maximum amount of time. Theoretically the ref should add back the time, but usually that does not happen.

Now if RB was behind, Agudelo would have been subbed in earlier.

Not to mention that a guy like Luke is always red-cardable, so even if you get him out for a minute, you are protecting the team.

One other thing. Almost everyone expected Juan to start. But instead Backe put Dane Richards up top (scored only goal of game) and used Dax McCarty in Dane's usual RM spot. That improved midfield defense against a strong Union team. It also kept Juan on the bench in case he was needed as a late game offensive substitute. It worked. Cannot argue with a W, unless you are Paul Gardner.

Don't mind him. Most of the article is nonsense. His real point, the real crux of the problem, is that Agudelo's Latin American and Luke Rodgers is English.

"His style, still developing, will naturally be more Latin American"

He ignores the fact that Luke Rodgers has proven to be a more effective goal scorer, that the Red Bulls won the match, and that at the end of it all, what he defines as "ugly soccer" won another game in MLS.

I find it hard to fathom that someone still developing will "naturally" be more Latin American. It's kinda like saying an American playing basketball in Europe in his teen years will naturally have an American playing style.

His obsession with the "Latin American" play style generally just becomes an obsession with players with Latin American names. That's why Gardner is frustrating.

sorry to say, but they will have to-- 3 of their supposedly top players (hassli, chiumiento and jarju) all 'tanked' this latter part of the season and ended up 'riding the pine'-- what does that tell you about 2012??
simply put, the Caps are still significantly away from being a competitive team in MLS and will have to add 4-6 new and better players to be so
my major fear is that Tommy soehn gets to pick/recommend the new players, which is what happened for 2011... and we all know how that went!
