I don't know what else to do but voice my disatisfaction. The New York Times Sunday Sports section had no mention of MLS's 8th Season game opener. They had a WUSA Schedule in the corner listed under soccer but no game score for the MLS. Only on the web did they have a small paragraph on the game from the associated press. Why should anyone be mad? This is the largest most important newspaper in NYC. The non coverage of the MLS is obnoxious, especially when the league is still here and is making progress. I know everyone will say , yeah get used to it or read another newspaper, but I'm all for sending a message to the news media when it comes to the MLS . This is the place to send an email or write aletter to the New York Times to voice your dissatisfaction. Anyone with me? Letters to the Editor Letters for publication should be no longer than 150 words, must refer to an article that has appeared within the last seven days, and must include the writer's address and phone numbers. Dude - you beat me to the punch. I couldn't believe it - page after page of bezbol and even a WUSA score and blurb - but no MLS. Didn't Garber mention in an interview recently that he was getting together with the editor of the NYT or ESPN or something. He must be fuming.
Not to defend the NY Times, but with two huge NCAA basketball games being played last night, it's not inconceivable that they had at least a blurb about the game that was edited/removed at the last moment for space reasons. Might be why they had the AP release on the web but not the paper. If you're the Sports Editor and you have a choice between an article between the Colombus Crew/LA Galaxy game or a great story such as a local team like Syracuse making it to the Finals, which would you pick?
It's not a matter of choice @#$%^&^ all the need is a decent space with a title, can't they do that? I think all fits in the thousand pages they have. One little space, that's all I'm asking for.
I got the early edition -- and of course there was nada. Did anyone see the late edition? The game was on too late for the early edition, which is out on the street by 5 pm, Sat. I searched the NYTimes website for MLS, soccer, etc. games on 04/05 and came up with nothing -- except a WUSA preview and the article about the goalie nobody knows who is getting his kicks in Rumania. I have a love-hate 'relationship' with the Times -- and I manage to avoid the 'r' word in my work-a-day life; the paper's attitude often reduces me to psychobabel. The Gray Lady can be a real b***h, but I'm hooked on her sophisticated point of view. Wait'll you see the terrific write-up the ManU tour gets.
Let's protest the bastards. We can form a human shield around the printer press not allowing them the receive their precious paper (that comes from killing trees.) When they realize that the can't put paper to print, they'll either capitulate or shoot us with bullets and report that nothing happened.
Keep writing Dear Sports Editor As a lifelong New York Times reader, soccer player, youth coach, administrator and now professional soccer fan, I'd be most appreciative if you would entertain regular, at least three times per week coverage of MLS soccer. As you know, the sport has grown to gargantuan proportions, there are more than 16 million youth players nationally, my hometown Chappaqua has a shortage of soccer fields, because more than 2,000 children in this little hamlet play youth soccer. Major League Soccer, to the great pleasure of so many of us, is growing very nicely also. Please adjust your sports editorial policy to grow accordingly. We do appreciate and eagerly look forward to George Vescy, Jack Bell and others fine soccer coverage. We do not appreciate your publication of material by Jerry Trecker. It often contains incorrect information. Thanks, and respectfully submitted, Ted Kamp
Well, I did my bit and sent a letter. Don't know if it will do any good, but why not. I don't get the in print version, so could those that do keep us updated? Thanks.
I actually think Jack Bell is doing a great job with the amount of space they give him -- which is usually Tuesdays and Thursdays. It's not front page stuff, but it's consistent. People should also write in with praise of the job he's doing - it might result in more coverage. Maybe they are waiting until Metros season opener to preview the season?
Re: Keep writing Ted, Thanks for the e-mail template. I sent a similar one also to: nytnews@nytimes.com Kevin
i have a subscription down here in maryland to the nytimes and have often been suprised at the shoddy coverage MLS and the Stars (see i didn't say scum) by the paper, even though at least on of the columnists seems "pro soccer". i also sent a nasty email whinning about the lack of coverage of the opening match.
Here's mine Dear Sir or Madam, As a religious reader of the Sunday New York Times for the last 10 years, I would like to express my dismay with your lack of coverage of the opening of the Major League Soccer season which took place on Saturday, April 5th in Columbus, OH. As the nation's foremost international publication, you should be embarrassed at the neglect that you have shown to a major event in America's version of the world's most popular sport. As you may or may not know, Major League Soccer now in its 8th season has been more successful than any other start up sport league in American history. It's All Star game and league Championship, the MLS Cup are fixtures on national network television, a feat took the NBA 30 years to complete. Yet the lack of coverage that your paper gives to soccer is minimal. The only thing listed was a box score on the bottom of the statistics page. Please make sure that your coverage of the MLS improves. I have seen write-ups about Arsenal-Chelsea matches from across the Atlantic in England. Why not pay at the very least that much attention to the MetroStars across the Hudson in Giants Stadium. Thank you for your time Hope it helps.
