I'm thinking this is going to happen much sooner than anyone currently thinks... Atlas owner promotes Liga MX, MLS joint league Santos Laguna and Atlas owner Alejandro Irarragorri is adamant that MLS offers an example of sustainable growth for Liga MX and that a North American super-league would be beneficial for both leagues in the long term. Irarragorri's statement comes after Liga MX announced it would be suspending promotion and relegation for the next five years, which has caused a fierce debate and split opinions in Mexico. Irarragorri pointed out that attracting new ownership groups to Mexican football has been difficult and added that the MLS model has proved more sustainable. "A high percentage of Mexican football's income comes from the USA," wrote Irarragorri. "Their league [MLS] has been growing in an ordered, slow, but consistent way in all senses: commercially, infrastructure, financial structure, diffusion and on the field." Irarragorri stated that MLS generates a higher annual revenue than Liga MX and that the type of investors and solidity of the league bodes well for future growth. More info in the link above.
In the sense of a merger or consolidation, I don't believe it will ever happen. Neither federation would like it, FIFA would reject it, and unless each Liga MX owner stands ready to pay a roughly $500 million expansion fee, MLS owners won't go along either. There does seem to be some strong sentiment in favor of increased intramural competition, because MLS thinks it will get more eyeballs and LMX thinks it will get them some badly needed US bucks. Maybe they're right, although I don't believe that its anything like the slam dunk some people think it is.
I agree with most of this; money doesn't solve EVERY problem, so I still think it's dubious. However, I don't think MLS owners would necessarily object for the reason you stated. It would depend on how a consolidation or merger would affect TV revenue. I mean, from their perspective, they have to know the MFL teams aren't going to kick in a half billion each. On the other hand, if the MLS teams can get an extra $25M per year in TV revenue, that money plus the increase in MLS franchise values would make it a really good deal for the owners. An extra $10M in TV revenues, maybe not.
I see your point although I'm coming up a bit shy of agreeing 100% I think maybe the dividing line is where MLS owners think fan numbers, TV eyeballs and ticket sales are headed in the medium term. If I were them I'd be a bit leery of cutting the Mexican league in for a healthy chunk of future money if I thought there was a good chance revenues were headed sharply north anyway.
