This was talked about in a series of articles called something like "An Oral History of the Early Days of MLS". I think the article was in three parts, and was published on MLS' site sometime within the past five years. It was surprisingly candid, in my opinion, considering what we've all come to expect from the league communications, and this story of Waldo's goal and its significance is a prominent story in the series' first article.
