The apologie is, imo sanctomonious and also has a double edge too it on 1 hand apologising for there shocking behaviour back in '89 and on the other having a pop at us for having a go at Rooney for selling his story to 'em. Rooney may have been a young kid when this occured but a/ he is a footballer and has been a part of the footballing community for many years so must know what happened with this rag. and b/ his agent / advisers obviously dont have a clue. Their advice not just poor but unbelievable bad, the lad comes from a place where some ppl wont even have a copy in the house (mine is 1 of 'em, lol). imo too little too late, i dont blame Rooney, i have nothing aaints him. I really try to stay away from the stuff like this, simply because it's not really my place to talk about it. In 1989 I was in eighth or ninth grade in Texas, experimenting with drugs and buying loads of records, totally unaware of the existance of Liverpool Football Club. I'll continue to not click on Sun links (I did for this one), correct statements made my uneducated individuals, and give my best wishes to the families who lost their love ones (as I would any tragedy), but I don't feel it's my place to act like it affects me personally when other people had to endure real pain from it. BTW...this is not, by any means, a judgement on other fans that were born in America or whatever. It's hardly incorrect to be moved by such a tragic event.

after reading the article I have no idea what they are talking about. I hardly knew the game in 1989, let alone anything about English soccer. for the uniformed: A) What did the Sun do/say back in 89 that pissed everyone off? B) What does it have to do with Rooney? B) why are ppl pissed off at Rooney?
Ran headlines and stories saying that Hillsborough was caused by drunken Liverpool fans and hooligans, and that they robbed and urinated on the dead (among other things). This cause nearly all of Liverpool to boycott the Sun newspaper, since it wasn't true and extremely disrespectful. It then took them a loooong time to admit they were wrong and lied (I didn't actually even know they did). He's from Liverpool and undoubtedly knows many many many LFC fans and families whose lives were directly affected by it. Because he sold a story to the Sun, apparently.
Unbelieveable - all they had to do was make a genuine heartfelt apology and they couldn't get that right. Instead they lay blame at Scousers doors for not forgetting the lies THEY printed 15 years ago.

I haven't seen the "apology", but it seems a day late and more than a dollar short.
Unfortunately many newsagents in Liverpool are forced to have copies of The S*n on display by the distributors - if they refuse they won't be given any papers to sell - which'd obviously put them out of business. However at the end of the day all the unsold copies are sent back to the distributors and there are harldy any copies of the paper sold in Liverpool. The more I read that ********e excuse for an apology the more angry I get - they even have a go at the local press here - as they are owned by their biggest rival, and stick up for Rooney - it seems they only 'apologised' to deflect criticism that he has been receiving over the deal he signed with them. His agents must have had a labotomy to sanction that deal if they thought they weren't going to get flak for it on Merseyside.

speechless...I knew about the tragedy itself obviously, but that's incredible... Being an Everton fan, I did know this... make sense no real comment on this one, but i can definately understand why some would be offended/pissed off at him for doing so.
Apologies if I seem to be going on about this ..I have read the artical again in the clear light of day and I am still incensed on just how manipulative it is. The paper claims to have apologised "long ago". No matter how hard I try I can not track this apology down or any evidence appart from there say so that it exists. If there was an apology no doubt it was the usuall grudging line or 2 somewhere on page 10. Not a fully frank unreservid aplogy for every1 to see. The apology reprimands the ppl of liverpool over the handeling of Rooney they say sorry so they can bring us down. I cant believe this shower have the audacity to attempt to dicipline us. The paper uses Rooney's popularity to try to shift the moral perspective. Now, if we continue the boycott, we are "trashing a young man of whom everyone should be proud" and continuing a moral vendetta that all right thinking ppl would have dropped long ago. The Guardian.co.uk website and newspaper are pretty good about the raising issues regarding Hillsborough - every anniversary they print/publish 2 or 3 good pieces on it and what the latest situation is. Today they also put the boot into The S*n:- www.guardian.co.uk/football
They still don't get it do they. This was not a mistake It was a deliberate and inflamitory attempt to degrade Liverpool fans who had died and to make profits from the controversy the scum created. This was not an apology this was just a continium. "We've apologized, (Sort of) you can't acccept that so you're typical scousers. But it sells papers and that's the bottom line. It wasn't a MISTAKE.!!! I doubt seriously if there were any informants. This was a pack of lies made up just to sell papers.
Those of you who have been on here a while know about my experiences at Hillsborough. I will not bore you with recounting them again today. Suffice it to say, usscouse has summed up my feelings very well. That newspaper is never going to be forgiven by me. Never. They can apoplogize every day, I will never forgive them.
