I talked to Joe on Sat and he will not be showing the US-Grenada game on Sunday, June 13 (it's on ESPN2 at 1 pm). He will be showing the Euro Championship: France-England game ($20). Heads up now so you can plan accordingly (we can pick any other place that has ESPN2 if people want to get together). K
Making money---That's the idea when you run a restaurant or any business. Hopefully the US game will remain on ESPN2.
Assuming no more presidents die and/or the WNBA get preemptive rights, the Capitol Lounge will put on the Deuce.
I'm sorry, but what did you expect? They can fill the place with about 300 fans paying $20 apiece. The sole aim of a money-making establishment is to make money. My plan is to stay home and use Tivo to its best advantage.
I'm going to float the idea with him tonight. I'm pretty sure he'll be shaking his head. We've gotten so burned out on the various kids' sporting events and he's been looking forward to an unbooked weekend. For me to say I'm driving to OH for the day will not likely go over so well.
Yeah, and maybe we can confirm that last weeks thread wasn't so premature as some posters like to believe.
I completely understand the decision to show the France-England match over US-Greneda. Joe owns a business, and he certainly has a right to decide to show what will be a more profitable game for him. However, after not showing a few US matches in a row, I'm not sure he should expect to see large crowds at his establishment for US games. There's a give-and-take involved. People can always express their disapproval with their wallets.
I guessed I missed the memo where Summers was converted into one huge room with one TV, or the one that there are still multiple rooms but they can only show one program at a time. Again, if he's sold the place out (or expecting to for that matter) then more power to him for letting people know. But if it's not standing room only for the Euro match he's really distancing himself from some of his most loyal customers. I bet there are a ton of people who wouldn't mind watching both at the same time, myself included.
And that's the part that confuses me. Now, granted, I don't teach business at Kellogg, but seems to me that you could try to please two audiences. I guess there could be a lot of eurosnobs pissed off by having to endure the unwashed masses of US fans though. Tim
I don't disagree with you. By my count there's 17 more US WCQ after this match. Maybe he is expecting to sell the place out. I think he did pretty well during the Euro qualifiers though (standing room only). My general feeling is, if he's decided that he'd rather have the Euro business, then I'll get on the Metro and go to Capitol Lounge or Lucky Bar. There's plenty of places that would welcome even a samll crowd on an otherwise dead Sunday afternoon or Wednesday night.
If they're charging $20 to watch the Euro game, would they also have to charge $20 to the US fans to make sure Euro fans don't watch for free? If so, it wouldn't make much sense to go for US game you could watch at home for free. Of course, they should still put it on a TV or two for those paying fans who'd like to see both.
Most people can and will watch this game at home as it's on ESPN2 (the other US game being on Fox Sports World was problematic because not every bar or home in the metro DC area could easily flip it on). K
I don't think this has anything to do with it. It's one of the most highly anticipated matches of the first round (Germany/Holland and Spain/Portugal being the others) on only the second day of competition. If Joe can fill up the entire bar and restaurant with people paying $20 to see the game on top of food and drink, then I don't see why he shouldn't. And for those of you whining that he doesn't care about US soccer, remember that it's decisions like this that affords him the ability to, say, open up at 4:00 AM to show the US Olympic matches a few years back.
Exactly. I bet that Joe will have a tv or two turned to the US game. I do not fault Joe for making some money. For everyone complaining how many times at a loss has joe shown a game that no one else is showing.
What's the big deal. Watch it somewhere else. It's not as if Summers has anything going for it other than soccer on TV. The place is a hole, the food/service is terrible, and the atmosphere is somewhat like a nightmare where you continually wake up to find that the staff at Denny's has invaded your football party. Here in Baltimore we don't have many (if any) options at all, so it's all a bit too much to hear you folks down in the DC area complaining about the situation. That's not to defend Summers and Joe whatever his name is, I could care less about the place. I think there should be a way for the dude to put one TV on the US match, god knows I'd like to watch both. I would just choose to watch somewhere else. When I'm watching a televised game in DC, I watch it in a city bar rather than Summers 95% of the time. I've only been to Summers on 3 or 4 occasions. There are Summers regulars that know I don't like the place or its location, but we manage to get along. In conclusion ( ), I don't understand the urge to tear one's hair out over this, and I don't understand the urge to rush to the defense of Summers, who haven't become even a minor sponsor of DC United.
Well I started a US -Grenada viewing thread over on US Men - Fans and Travel forum. The intention is to get all Baltimore US supporters to go watch the game at the James Joyce down at the Inner Harbor. The Joyce has excellent food, the best pint of Guinness in town, and great service. Claddagh's in Canton is another possibility. Lets get this WC Qualifying campaign started in style.
