Didn't see this anywhere else. I met many folks from this board at Summer's when I lived in Alexandria. What a great hangout for away United games, US games, or EPL. It's demise speaks to futbol entering the American living room in a big way.
Yeah, it was elsewhere on BS, but not in the DCU forum that I know of. There was certainly a time when it was almost your only option for a lot of soccer viewing. But in addition to the proliferation of additional options, Summers itself took a huge slide, with their quality of service tanking and the food seeming like something from Devil's Island. I'll have fond memories of some times there; but I won't miss the place itself.
I hung there with a lot of people who were or would end up being friends, and drank plenty of decent beer there. Thank science it was there in 1998 to watch the World Cup. If you ordered food before a game started, you might get it by the start of the second half. If you got it. Which is the reason people stopped going as soon as the feeds became more available and more bars could get games easier, then the games started going into your actual house and its days were numbered for sure. I figured they'd switch to another hard-to-find niche sport like rugby or something and keep trudging along with those fans. I had no idea there had been a fire there at all before reading the story. Been a long time since I've even been to that neighborhood.
good riddance.... multiple times i had to pay a cover and when the feed crapped out 5 minutes into the game they refused to refund me.
As British breakfasts go... They never had to provide service. They showed futbol games. That's why I went. It was a place that United and footie fans could find each other. We are in a different era, and I'm grateful.
The Queen Vic: good soccer coverage, as good as English pub food gets, great roast on Sunday . . .and within a three block walk of my house. Win.
And if you did get it, you were probably better off not eating it. Man their food was useless at best. I appreciate them for being there when no one else was, but I'm surprised it has survived this long given how poor the food and service often was. Thanks for everything (except the food and the smoke) Summers. Watching soccer in the middle of the night after going out in DC or Arlington in 2002 was a great time.
Decent place to watch a game but it was an incredibly unsanitary establishment. I took a swig of beer there one time and ended up with a live cockroach scurrying around in my mouth. Suffice it to say, the manager caught an earful.
