More interestingly with Brooks would be if Zimmerman can’t go because of injury (and he’s struggled to stay healthy as of late) whether he’d get any consideration as one of the overage centerbacks.

At the end of the day Jonathan Tomkinson is
    - a 22 year old
    - who plays in the English fourth division
    - is decent but not great there

(I'm not going to pretend like I've watched a single fourth division game but his Fotmob rating is the same as George Campbell in MLS and Maximilian Dietz in the 2 Bundesliga)

Similarly 19 year old Damion Downs just got 14 Bundesliga minutes for Koln vs Bayern Munich... he should get more time next season since they'll be in the 2.Bundesliga.

    20 year old Nathaniel Brown

It will be interesting to see how Tessmann does in Serie A. When he was there it seemed to me one of his main issues was speed of thought. He was just a bit slower than the other players in recognizing how a play was developing. That's a challenge for a lot of younger players. Making the game slow down for them.

Tessmann never looked quite up to the level with the full USMNT either... but then Johnny Cardoso was the same way, until the last few games... both 22yo and Tessmann has a different development path so maybe a bit behind.

I think post Olympics I’d probably give him a shot ahead of Maloney if there are injuries to Adams or Cardoso.

While I don't necessarily disagree with you and would take Tessmann over Maloney long term if I had to pick one, Lennard Maloney is a 24 year old (just two years older than Tessmann) who is a regular starter for a mid-table Bundesliga team (Heidenheim are 10th which would probably shock many who haven't been paying attention) that just beat Bayern Munich in their own stadium with Maloney playing the full 90. Pretty decent option to have behind Adams and Cardoso (maybe should even be tried at CB?)... Tessmann should be in Serie A next season whether Venezia are promoted or some other club buys him, so we'll get to see what he can do in a top four league soon enough, same as what happened with Johnny Cardoso moving to Betis and going from fringe national team player to A team roster regular.

I just think Tessmann has a higher ceiling than Maloney and while he didn’t look great the last time he was capped it’s not like he’s got a ton of time with the team. And he may not end up being good enough, I would just give him the next chance if Adams or Cardoso weren’t healthy.

Lennard Maloney is what he is. You can't just say he's in the Bundesliga so he's going to be better than every other option that isn't in a Big 5 league. You have to watch him play. He is a very limited player who fits into a very narrow system well. I have my doubts he is going to have success anywhere that doesn't play exactly like Heidenheim plays (they play a great system for a team that is almost always overmatched in talent).

Maloney rarely advances the ball forward. His passing range is limited. He doesn't have much creativity and he never gets into the attack. That's fine for what Heidenheim wants to do.

But Tessmann, Aidan Morris, McGlynn, Busio, even Obed Vargas - they are not in a league equivalent of the Bundesliga, but they have tools the USMNT wants and needs far more.

This is extremely close. The thing is that I am not sure how you can take both Tolkin and Wiley on an 18 player roster.

If it was 22 players, I could see it. But on an 18-player roster, you take your starting RB and your starting LB. Then you probably take a fullback who can backup both sides (like Harriel) and then have wingers who can backup after that.

Wiley just had his best game of the season.. no question. But it's not like Tolkin has been bad this season.

Wow embarrassing for the NBA that MLS will have the more talented players on the Olympic roster, one will have Tolkin whereas the other won't have Doncic, Jokic, Giannis, Embiid...

Embiid was actually a big dual national recruiting win for the US.

I look forward to Tolkin and Lebron walking in the opening ceremonies together.

Yow stock continues to rise... on the other hand it's hard to imagine a guy like Kamungo making the roster at this point

Matt Doyle: USA roster prediction: Who will play at Paris 2024 Olympics?

    Center Back
    Roster projection
    • Maximilian Dietz (Greuther Fürth)
    • Walker Zimmerman (Nashville SC)
    • Mark McKenzie (Genk)
    Also in the mix
    • George Campbell (CF Montréal)
    • Jalen Neal (LA Galaxy)
    • Jonathan Tomkinson (Bradford City)

Isn't Walker Zimmerman still injured? When did he last play soccer?

Interesting to see no honorable mention for James Sands, given his versatility to play DM and CB. Also feels wild to keep off Yow but I don’t mind any of the inclusions over him (Luna, Guti, Paredes)

Pretty dumb by Doyle. 3 DMs out of 16 field players is ridiculous, as well as no Yow or Paxten on the squad.

He’s definitely had a number of nagging injuries since the World Cup, though none of them serious.

We’ll see where he is this summer but if he’s not healthy next in line is one of Trusty, Brooks, or Miazga I guess.

I remember asking Brooks about the possibility of playing in the Olympics in 2012 (before the failed qualifying), he didn’t seem interested at all.

I’d be surprised if he’s an option

    Same thing with Maloney.
