    Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has run across anything like Stratomatic for Soccer? Some sort of card based game that lets you play a game of soccer.

    Thanks in advance

I've always wished there was a strat-o-matioc soccer game, and back when i had free time (ie before I had a computer) I spend a few hours trying to work out a workeable game myself. Just couldn't come up with the framework. Baseball's a very easy game to simulate -- the game can easily be reduced to one-on-one situations, whether its hitting, pitching, stealing, fielding. Soccer must be the worst (though I imagine basketball and hockey wouldn't be too easy either -- baseball's the only strat-o-matic game I've played).
A couple of years ago I searched on ebay for soccer board games. If memory serves me well, the only ones I found were old english kids games which I doubt come anywhere close to approaching stratomatic. But my search was by now means exhaustive (NOw that I think of it, I don't think i've ever tried searching google).

    Ask and ye shall receive...

Though I would encourage you to check out www.eofa.org and esms, which are computer based decendents of the stratomatic games, I understand the nostalgia behind it.

It just so happens that my local paper ran a little article just on this subject...

    http://www.wilmingtonstar.com/apps/...0031021&Kategori=NEWS&Lopenr=310210415&Ref=AR

and listed a website where they sell an up to date stratomatic style game for soccer

I downloaded the basic game (its free, and takes about ten seconds), but apparently you need MS-Excel to open it. I don't have it, and in fact I don' even know what it is. Apparently all the game is is the cards you print out, is there a way to open it with a word processor?

    Bump.

Thanks for the link, Chris. I collect soccer games like a nut. I agree that soccer is hard to reduce to a board game, because it's so fluid. Baseball is a perfect sport for a board game (and there are lots of excellent baseball board games).
I should also note that I played Strat-o-matic hockey as a kid, and I loved it. I thought it was very well-done.

The rules are in English and Spanish, and it plays exactly like soccer (football). We brought it out for the WC in Germany in 2006 (Fussball Taktik 2006). We had lots of requests from other countries and so brought out the English/Spanish/Italian/French, etc. version. The first STW games were sold in the US, Canada and world-wide this past Christmas. Comes with a cool timer, trophy, yellow and red cards, etc. High quality wood pawns (11 per team) and pieces. Nice 'flow' to the game, and a nice full pitch.

There are extra teams (yellow and green) available seperately.

It is good for adults or children, pro or novice, male or female. We keep adding more and more countries. Please give it a try. If you have any question please ask. Check out the reviews page.

    It sucks to be honest.

How can it be any fun when there are no actual player or team ratings?

    Complete waste of time.

There has to be something or soemone out there to help get some reality invovlement.

    have you played it?

we still haven't gotten it going yet.
I'd like to see one like strat-o-matic baseball. detailed stats and what not. based on real life percentages.

Soccer Tactics WORLD is not a stats or trivia game. It is acutally playing soccer. It has a very nice flow to it. You move a player, you then move the ball. Based on what happened you move again on offence. The defence then comes to the same square and 'battles' for the ball. There are yellow and red cards based on the battles.

The object is to move down the field and to get into the penalty area and shoot for a goal. On the shot you can score, or get a corner, or a goalie kick (or save). You can also score from the long-distance squares.

There are free kicks, corners, penalty kicks and goal kicks. The defenders and keepers have more strength than the midfielders or strikers. Scoring is just about right.

Gold trophy (rather large) and a cool transluscent digital timer are included to set whatever time you want for a game.

Football fans rate this game very high world-wide. It is available in The USA, Canada, England, Spain, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Australia, and possibly some other countries.

It was invented in Germany, just before the World Cup.
