Excited for this signing. Proper modern fullback. Shaw is excellent but a lot of what he does is basic, done to a high level. I think right now Shaw will start and should, but I expect healthy competition.

I think Shaw is going to have to raise his game, but he'll for sure get minutes during the Europa League etc. Malacia's advantage is intensity. He doesn't really do anything much better than Shaw. I think he's building an understanding with Martinez and having intense - proactive players near Martinez multiplies his effect. Martinez is so sharp, so quick to close down that he forces mistakes and rushes players into bad touches. Having a LB who does the same and another CB who is aggressive just has a domino effect. Malacia is an enigma to me. His movement is so interesting. He can improve as an overlapping fullback but he takes up these wonderful inverted positions where he's like a 10 or an 8. He'll run right down the center of the pitch when it is vacated, providing good value. This position is useful for linking play (obviously) but also for winning the ball back if an attack breaks down.
