I'm thinking the NYT reporter reads BigSoccer...

I'm thinking you're the "internet fanatic" he's referring to, also.

By the way the coach was fired since last game another home loss (22/03 Politehnica 1-3 Rapid ) , remains to be seen if Steve makes the bench under the new coach.

Multescu ( the new coach), a former FC Dinamo Bucuresti and FC Jiul Petrosani player, started his coaching career with Romanian sides Jiul and Astra Ploiesti before heading for Turkey to coach Samsunspor and Adanaspor AS. An expert in saving clubs in trouble, he will take charge of Politehnica until the end of the season.

Dave, or anyone else - Do you know if Reese is an 81 or not?

All the reports say he's 22 but I'm trying to find out if he's age-eleigble for the U23 team and since he's 22 he could have been born in 1980 as well.

Do we have any reason to think he's good enough for that to matter?

No, but he's currently got more first division games than any other GK in our U23 pool.

The point isn't that he's good enough, the point is to monitor who is eligible and see how they progress and if they should be considered, based on their club performance, for a call-up.

I mean, a few months ago, would it have mattered when Casey Schmidt was born? No. But, after a great MLS preseason he's suddenly someone who has emerged as a player Mooch should keep an eye on so his date of birth is relevant. There are always late bloomers and as long as players like this are out there, we as fans and the USSF as a group should at the least follow them to see how they're doing.

Maybe now that NYT did this article on him, some inquiring minds might follow.

I think you misunderstood my point. I get why you want to monitor him, I was just trying to make the point that backup goalie on a relegation-threatened Romanian team after a NAIA and minor league career shouldn't really be driving him up the depth chart for the age group teams. Frankly the fact that he said he'd rather play there than in MLS is annoying primarily because it smells of the pretense that he had a choice.

I was in Romania last year, I didn't see any games because the season had just ended.

However, $30,000 goes a long way there and there's something to be said for being a sports star, such as he is.

BTW, how many posts does it take to reach "Internet fanatic" status

This pretty much hits the nail on its head...Reese is a good (decent?) keeper, BUT he's not good enough to displace any of the current MLS and (possibly) A-League keepers...I wish him the best in Romania just so long as he doesn't continue to bash MLS in the process.

Steve Reese played only one game for his new club out of posible 4. He was blamed for 2 of the 3 goals, missed the ball on crosses. The team has 3 goalkeepers, still their new coach is bringing in a serbian for a trial this week. First game under the new coach is tomorrow, I would be stunned if Steve started. Players in the Rumania first Div. get payed well, up to $ 80,000 us dollars. Reeves makes $ 30,000 as a reserve. He wouldn't earn that as a keeper in USA. Now the average monthly income in Rumania is tops $ 250, yes you heard me right.
