Entrenador del New England observa jugadores hondureños La Tribuna (Honduras) January 30, 2008 http://www.latribuna.hn/news/48/ARTICLE/26548/2008-01-29.html
The translation says he's watching three games and that he's not looking at anyone in particular. I hope that last part is wrong.
maybe he said that because he doesn't want the player or players he is looking at that he is specifically watching them or he doesn't want other teams to know who he's looking at. It would definitely effect the way they played. Considering his limited budget any sort of competition for a player probably rules him out pretty quickly. I can definitely understand why Stevie wouldn't want to reveal his targets at this point.
That's what the article says, but do you really think that's the case? Personally, I think he's looking at someone specific in the first and third games and he's taking in an extra one because it fit in his schedule. Athletico Olanchano - Marathón Real Espana - Hispano Motagua - Victoria. Interestingly, Mortagua has an American named Steven Morris.
I'm sure your right. He loves soccer so he flew there to catch a few matches and get some sun. No reason to think he had any other reason to make the trip.
He probably caught wind of a few players that might be near the end of their contracts and went down to see if anyone of them fit his system. I hope history does not repeat itself and this does not become another argentina trip that has yielded nothing so far
Why wouldn't it? When was the last time Nicol and company went to South/Central America and came back with a player? None since Cancela. This trip will be no different, and those who think it will be are ignorant to the facts.
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that Nicol is looking to identify a player or two that he may chose to bring in on trial during training in New England or while the club is on their annual trip to Bermuda and Mexico. That's been his modus operandi before, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case here too.
Does Chivas USA still hold his MLS rights? With our attacking situation, I'd actually take him. Maybe Nicol could get him to pull a Randy Moss and be a team player. I'd love to watch him score a goal in the Meadowlands.
It also doesn't have his current stats and has several errors. He signed a new contract before the 2005 season, which I believe was for three years. Unless he signed a new one, I'm thinking he's done with his MLS obligations. EDIT: I looked it up, it was a four year deal.
According to Goff and this report out of Honduras, former FC Dallas and Chivas USA player, Ramon Nunez (22 years old) recently returned to Honduras to play for Olimpia, as well.
Ives chimes in: Nicol in Honduras, could Revs be eyeing Guevara? Two things we know are that Guevara is desparate to return to MLS and the Revs are in dire need of a playmaking midfielder. Coincidence? I doubt it. http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2008/01/nicol-in-hondur.html
Ives says his contract expired in Dec. "I'm not sure what the status of Guevara's MLS rights are (his MLS contract expired in December) but it's safe to say Chivas USA has his rights, if anybody does."
So apparently there's no players we liked from Argentina that we could sign? Surprise! I'd agree with Evan ... I think this is looking at potential trialists for the camp. And that's all this is.
I don't know. There are rumors that PNE upped their offer to $3.4 mill. I suspect they are beginning to approach a number that we might just accept. If we sell Twellman, Guevara would make a lot of sense. As a fan, I'd hate it, but the Revs would almost have to do something like this to replace some of the goals they lost.
I'm pleased that he's making some of an effort, though the fact that he's basically looking for a player to fall into his lap quickly subsides that positive reaction. As far as Guevara goes, he's locker room poison and has a massive ego. He's very one-dimensional in my opinion. Yes, he can create, but as MLS defenses got better, they learned how to defend against him and his lack of a contribution to the attack showed that. He wouldn't be good money for value, and I do not want him on the team.
If he's looking at players in games, presumably they are under contract and wouldn't be free to go off and train with the Revs. It would be pretty unusual for a team to agree to let an active player (starter?) go train with a foreign club in-season. That would fall into the category of something that could be true or could be not true. I don't make the connection between possibly losing a striker and adding an amid. But, if they are looking at Guevara, I've been saying for several years now that I thought he'd be a good fit. Yes, he's been a jerk for a dysfunctional organization. Remind anyone of someone? Playing in the super bowl this week, has the talent to require the focus of the entire defense - freeing up a whole bunch of other players, has become a model professional when surrounded by teammates and coaches he respects, ... I think looking in the Honduran league, our acquisition money could actually interest most teams - as compared to Argentina, for ex. I wouldn't be surprised if Nicol is looking for a left-back. I would think a solid, left-sided defender might be available for what the Revs have to offer. And, we all know, this trip is likely to produce nothing. But, if looking at 9 out of 10 players comes to nothing, what do you do? Look at 20, 50, 100. Give them credit for making the effort. They get dumped on for not doing this sort of thing and then dumped on when they do.
