Steve Nicol is such greatness. I was living in Texas when New England played in San Jose, and they visited Texas after I moved to San Francisco. I was going to totally whip him with a request for a picture and autograph.
That's great to hear. I'm going to be wearing my 94-95 LFC away shirt (the green & white quarters one - I think that was the year) in Foxboro this Sunday in his honor.
I'll certainly be rooting for him and New England on Sunday. I remember vividly the penalty shoot out at the end of the 84 European Cup Final and a youngster called Steve Nicol stepped up to take the first penalty against 80,000 Roma fans. I was in the Liverpool section with my brother and a mate and we thought what the hell is he doing taking the first pen (Phil Neal never missed them and we thought he should go first). As it turned out Nicol missed (I called him a name or two) but Grobbellaar's wobbly legs and Barney saved us a few kicks later!! I think the big match experience he has will serve the Revs well on Sunday.
I did show my age a bit didn't I? Ha ha. One of my distinct memories of that long train ride to Rome from Lime Street was this bloke who'd bought a load of white socks on Church St. right before the train left and about every four hours he changed his socks, put on a new pair and threw the old one's out of the train window!! I suppose he didn't want smelly feet in the Olympic Stadium or something. Getting bottles hurled at us when we arrived in Rome kind of sticks in my mind too

Nicol has just been named Major League Soccer's Coach of the Year after tranforming the fortunes of New England Revolution and leading them to the MLS Cup Final. He told the Boston Herald: "Obviously, it's an honour. But it's a team thing. If the team doesn't do well, then this accolade doesn't come to me. I'm pleased, but I'm also pleased for the team." On Sunday Nicol leads his side into battle against Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS Cup Final at the Gillette Satdium in Foxboro and victory there would complete a truly magnificent season for Chico. "Obviously, the run we've had has been fantastic," he adds. "It would be fantastic to finish it off by finally winning the game. We'll be bitterly disappointed if we don't win the game. But I think if we can take what we've done this year and build on it for the coming season, then that will be excellent. But we do want to win the game. There's no doubt about that." You said it, not me. Actually I was in my mid-teens then, but lving in Blue Ridge TX (moved there from KC) tended to give me a very narrow view of the world. All I knew about Liverpool back then was that four guys named after a bug came from there.
