This is pointless, but did anyone see Steve Nash bring up soccer during today's NBA game? He was just saying that it helped him develop into a better basketball player. It also showed clips of him juggling. He actually had some skills. Maybe he should get called up to the Canadian team?
His father played with Glenn Hoddle's father in England so he's a Tottenham supporter and his brother played for Canada's youth side. http://www.upperdeck.com/athletes/stevenash/news/news03.asp
martin nash plays for the a-league's montreal impact and IIRC has been named to canada's squad for the germany friendly
There was recently an interview with Steve Nash where he said he plalyed soccer as a kid but, at some point, he just lost interest in it. A few years later, when he was really a basketball player, he got back into soccer. To listen to him, it's not hard to imagine that he would much rather play for Tottenham than play basketball.
When in college at Santa Clara he came out to a couple informal spring kick arounds with the men's team. He's a great athlete and definitely had some good soccer skills. And more importantly, he's a really nice guy.
Not only does he say that he's a Spurs fan - but he actually keeps up with the club. I heard him interviewed a while back on Talksport - knows his stuff.
I follow the NBA closely. Never a Nash fan. That bit of info. has made me change my mind about him. Thanks.
I remember that Steve Nash also publicly supported the Santa Clara women's team when they played (and won) the 2001 College Cup in Dallas. I think the team attended a Mavs game to reciprocate. Nice gesture.
Nash and Nowitzki are my two favorite NBAers. I wonder if the German likes soccer too...or used to play. I first saw Nash's brother play soccer for Canada back in the Gold Cup where they won the whole thing. He's not a bad player at all. A tad slow and maybe not quite as good technically as you'd like for a central, creative mid, but still pretty good.
Have the Burn ever brought Martin Nash in for a trial? I imagine that, and even more so if they signed him, would generate a lot of buzz in Big D given whom Martin's brother is. I'm not advocating marketing concerns override personnel decisions, but it's not like Martin Nash can't play as he has been an All A-League player and a Canadian national teamer.
I still haven't gotten around to seeing Bend it Like Beckham, but my friend who has seen it (a non-soccer fan, though he liked the movie enough he intends to see it again) told me how it ends, which would give Nash an excuse to cameo in a sequel.
Apparently he ahd a sucessful tryout with the Burn a couple of years back. What scuttled it was the import requirements for MLS. He also had a tryout for Bolton that didn't progress beyond due to the clubs financial state at the time. http://www.canadian-soccer.com/players/nash.htm
