Well, today is the release date. I'll be picking up a copy during lunch. Does anyone have any early feedback on the new LP? Murf
I talked to a record store owner that really liked it. I haven't heard it yet though. That store owner will tell you if something is crap too. He's got good tastes, so I've got high expectations.
I think this record is excellent, definately miles better than self titled one that came out a few years back. It seems to me that they are jamming quite a bit more on this one, and the bonus disc just reminds me of the quirkier pavement stuff.
I got it last night and I really like it. I haven't listened to the bonus disc yet, but will later tonight. I bought so many CDs last night, I'm amazed I've gotten through them all today!
Well, after a week of listening to it, Pig Lib isn't doing it for me. It's OK. It's not horrible. But when I ask myself, "If this wasn't Malkmus...it was just some local nobody, would I be excited by this album?". And unfortunately, I find myself saying "no". The hooks aren't as sharp as Pavement and his debut album. The lyrics are muddy and when they are clear, aren't up to Malkmus' standards. The beats are rather unimaginative too. The drummer seems to rely too often on a constant 2/4 beat which you can hear in every bar band across America. I like a few of the tunes like "Vanessa of Queens" and "Us" but in general, I find myself reaching for my Beulah, Wilco, DJ Shadow, Koop and Calexico CDs over the last few days rather than Pig Lib. Perhaps it will grow on me (I want it to because I'm a massive fan of the man), but after a week, I'm disappointed. Murf
Murf, its weird, cause thats exactly how I felt about his first solo disc. I just couldn't get into it at all and held on just cause it was sm. but this one i love, i think that its much better than the first disc lyrically and musically....craw song really sticks out to me as well as the ones you mentioned. When i first put the self titled cd in my player and black book led of the album, i remember thinking, oh no....but with water and a seat leading of this one i got real excited and the album sustains that high for me... oh well, different strokes for different folks i guess...
Bullish on the pig ] Yeah, I felt the same way about the first album. Not original and not a pavement cont. either. Very average. But Pig Lig is something like 50% Malkmus/50% Pavement. Nice Hooks. Good effects on the guitar. (Or how ever they describe that ************). And the cryptic lyrics that we expect from SM. Very nice. There are a few jam tunes as well with enough changes of pace to be made into three songs. You agree?
Does anyone know if the ATP(All tomorrows parties) festival will still be held this September in NY. The concept behind the festival is they let one artist pick all the groups. Stephen Malkmus was to be the curator of the NY festival and pick the lineup.-but their web site has not updated info. I know that Matt Groenig of the Simpsons was doing the one in Los Angeles june 18-22 but it was cancelled due to poor sales(thats what NME said). It was to have FREAKWATER - NICK CAVE & BAD SEEDS AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF THE DEAD BANGS BLONDE REDHEAD BOREDOMS BRAVE COMBO BREEDERS BUFFALO DAUGHTER CARLA BOZULICH CHIK, CHIK, CHIK !!! It has all the videos and some cool interviews with the band. Also some decent live stuff. Does anyone else here listen to Preston's School of Industry? I actually enjoy listening to it more than Malkmus' stuff.
I really like what I've heard of Preston School of Industry. I only have that one EP and the song they did on that Phish tribute album.
I like PSOI but when I saw them open up for Wilco last summer they weren't very impressive, and that image taints their cd's for me.
I got an email that PSOI are coming out with a new EP in a couple of months...we'll see. I saw Malkmus a couple of weeks back and I swear the man doesn't deviate one note from the album. I could have just cranked the cd and kicked back with some Rolling Rock and got the same effect.
