http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6171083.stm Any which way you stand on the issue of stem cells, this, I think, is disturbing to anyone.
WOW. And I thought we were told that this would NEVER ever happen when talked about the grave possibility of this happening.
I don't recall anyone talking about the grave possibility of this happening. Stem cells used for research come from embryos in the earliest days of fertilization, not newborn babies. I could just as easily argue that if all zygotes created in fertility clinics and not implanted were by law used for stem cell research, then there would be no need for an illegal "harvesting" of stem cells from living babies.
I did. Someone will always have a cheaper option. I hear those organs from chinese dissidents run pretty cheap.
Gross. At the same time, the stem cell argument seems highly skeptical, if my science is correct. The entire point of getting embryonic stem cells is because they are pluripotent -- they can develop into anything. Cells taken from a fully formed fetus and/or horrifyingly a newborn baby, would be the same as "adult" stem cells. Anyone know something different?
That was my understanding. It seems like it would still be more viable, economically and otherwise, to get the cells from fetuses--even if illegal.
