TV Total is absolutely the funniest show on German TV IMO. Raab just called the Deutsche Bank and conducted an entire conversation using recorded quotes from Dieter Bohlen ("Ich kollabiere gleich..."). Man, I was laughing so hard I was in tears.

Oh, to make this soccer-related: he may commentate the Rostock-Bayern game for Premiere in a couple of weeks.

Raab is nothing compared to Harald Schmidt !!!!!!!!!

Raab is not bad, but he's doing too much. He doesn't have enough content for four shows a week (and he's a too bad actor to compensate it). Additionally he is copying too many elements of the old Harald Schmidt Show - and he's only doing bad copies. The worst thing about Raab is that he doesn't get when someting stops to be funny. Your Dieter Bohlen phone calls are a good example - it was funny when he was doing it the first time, but meanwhile he had the third phone call in three shows with almost the same content.

The Premiere commentating will probably be funny though.

I don't know, I've never found Harald Schmidt funny. No offense, since I know you're a big fan of his. I think maybe Schmidt's humor doesn't appeal to me as an American, but Raab's does.

And speaking of copying: you think Harald Schmidt has ever seen the David Letterman show? ;)

Sure it is a late night show as the ones of Carson, Letterman or Leno. But in the HSS you can nicely see changes of the concept throughout the years he's airing the show. He started as mere copy and developed over the years. Personally I don't completely like the new format as I'm a huge fan of the former "brain of the show" Peter Rütten who's a bit pushed aside by boring Manuel Andrack - on the other hand it's clear that they immediately cut the former parts of the show being copied by Raab.

But I hope you know that researches delivered that Schmidt is mainly watched by young, good looking and intelligent people ;)

Regarding Raab I got to say that I know him longer than his current show. I think he was better back then. However, at least I got to admit that Raab has the better guests in the show by far (though he doesn't understand how to talk with most of them)

    To quote Harald Schmidt:

"I love America. I even stole an American TV show !"

His show is awful! The jokes and storeis are so rehersed it's unreal, I mean at least someone like Leno comes accross as being funny, but HS looks like an accountant trying to be a chat show host!

In fairness though, some of my German friends tell me he used to be a lot funnier a few years ago.

Don't quite get what you're saying. Of course the show is rehearsed before, just like any other. The difference is that HS lets anyone know how his show works (e.g. the girl holding the cards is an often shown member of the cast). The chat part of the show is what's known to be the worst part, that's why they cut it down to one daily guest.

Admittedly the show at the moment is something like an internal family circle. You'll have problems to understand everything if you're not familiar with the people and some stories of the past. I also think the show was funnier about two years ago, but usually he's still no 1 on German TV.

My take on HS is that he's one of those facets of German culture that simply do not appeal to English speakers. Like Herbert Grönemeyer. When I see (or hear) Grönemeyer, I think, "Man, these Germans have some pretty uncharismatic rock stars." Yet there's no denying that Grönemeyer appeals to a lot of people in Germany. Same with HS. It's just that neither of them appeal to me as a native English speaker with an Anglo-American sense of humor and musical taste.

Well, Eminem, Britney Spears or all these boygroups are charismatic???? Everything is surely a mentality thing though (can someone explain Tom Green to me ;))

Grönemeyer wrote some good songs (not "Mensch", that's awful), but I always ask myself whether it wouldn't be better to restrict himself on composing instead of singing.

    The ultimative sports comparison:

Stefan Raab - fan of 1.FC Köln and Kölner Haie (hockey). In his show competed with several sports stars (boxing, speed skating, ski jump, etc.)

Harald Schmidt - no sports fan. Thomas Helmer forced him in the show to sign a membership with Bayern Munich. Has sympathy for VfB Stuttgart as he's born in that region. Sports is often a major topic in the show though, e.g. you can buy a 60 minutes video tape just dealing with the WC 98.

Herbert Grönemeyer - VfL Bochum fan. Composer and singer of the city anthem "Bochum", which is also used as VfL song.

Well I'm certainly not a fan of Eminem, Britney Spears or any of the boygroups (although Britney does have two "schwerwiegende Argumente" in her favor, if you know what I mean). But yes, I'd say they're charismatic. No question they're style over substance, whereas Grönemeyer is substance over style. But not even his substance appeals to me. To be honest, I actually prefer Olli P's version of Flugzeuge im Bauch and Loona's version of that Mambo song, whatever it's called.

I don't really think Tom Green is funny either, so I can't explain that one. You know who else is funny though? That guy - Matthias something - who did Super Richie and now has his own show. That guy is very creative and funny.

BTW, I do give Grönemeyer credit for remaining a Bochum patriot and not selling out like Westernhagen (another German rocker whose appeal is lost on me).

For what it's worth, I think the Toten Hosen are pretty charismatic, and my favorite band of all time is....

    The Scorpions!

Maybe i am the only one here who thinks this but: his show was never better than today.
    Schmidt is a genius.

Good Lord. Late 70s flashback. I have the Gronemayer 'Bochum' album.
Despite the fact that he is from my hometown, I do not think Tom Green is funny at all. And he is not American by the way. :)

Everyone who reads in the Movies etc. board sometimes should know this already. ;)

    Grönemeyer/Westernhagen:
I am German. I can not understand why they are popular.
We have great Punk, Metal and Hardrock bands. But not a single good (normal) rock band/musician.
    They ALL suck. sorry.

    No, explain :D

Obviously we got different definitions on what's charismatic. I mean, Britney Spears is looking gorgeous - I'm not blind - but that's only one of many things you need for being charismatic.

You prefer Pulli O. to Grönemeyer... ouch, that hurts! Loona... that's accepted for summer, but softie grinner Pulli O is just a catastrophe (and the proof that you can be successful in acting and singing without any talent).

Matthias ? was funny in his first days as Super Richie, but that's long time ago. Bullyparade was a good comedy show, at least some seasons (not the last one) and "Der Schuh des Manitu" (www.schuhdesmanitu.de) was absolutely funny (and you as someone who's living in Vienna should know that it was the most successful movie in Austria ever, moving 'Titanic' to rank 2). And btw, Christian Tramitz is the voice of Jefferson in the German adopted version of "Married...with children" - he's the only one I know who's really better than the original.

Agreed with Westernhagen, I also don't like him (and he's Dortmund fan...). Die Toten Hosen (Fortuna Düsseldorf sponsor - for those who still don't know: check their jersey ad at www.fortuna95.de - you've never seen a better jersey ad than this one) had some good songs, but most of them sound alike. And The Scorpions... well, speaking of songs sounding alike... the EXPO hymn was quite good though.

@Alex_K: don't know giants either, but some are pretty good. Besides that metal and hardrock are not my music and I'm rather listening to the quality of single songs instead of following whole bands: good in general are The Donots and Glow. Currently I love the song of the Afri-Cola spot by The Flames, but I don't know if they are good in general.

Harald Schmidt is a genius, of course! :D I still have a soft spot for Schmidteinander from the early 90's with Schmidt and Feuerstein.

Raab looks like a silly clown in comparison. However, I enjoyed his show two years ago when it was only aired once a week each Monday night, despite that the basic twist of making fun of the idiocy of other TV programmes was taken from Premiere's Zapping and Oliver Kalkhofe(sp?).

Regarding US shows, I really liked Conan O'Brian when his show was shown regularly over here on NBC Europe.

And while we're at it, my favorite German bands at the moment:

    http://www.kmfdm.com/
    http://www.wumpscut.de/
    http://www.wolfsheim.de/
    http://www.rammstein.com/

    http://www.dasich.de/
    http://www.welle-e.de/ (for the C64 nostalgia)

    http://www.tangerinedream.org/
    http://www.kraftwerk.com/
    http://www.devision.de/
    http://www.inextremo.de/

None of these Gemans are charismatic, though.

(Yes, I know, my musical taste sucks! :p)

Now that I cut the part with the music I finally found a great opinion ;). I also watched Schmidteinander, Pssst and all the early Schmidt shows, but when seeing the repetitions today... some of the charme somehow got lost over the years.

Sure, Olli Kalkofe's Zapping was a genius show. He also had a short series called "Die wunderbare Welt des Sports" last year. Kalkofe's difference to Stefan Raab is that Kalkofe disguised as some of the people in the spots and fooled it from inside. Raab is just showing the spots and commenting (too much) on them.

CNBC has Conan O'Brian and Jay Leno on Saturday and Sunday from 9 pm on I think. I prefer Leno though.

Her singing and her dancing of course! What did you think I was referring to?

I love the Donots' song Room With a View. The video is very cool too.

Did Glow sing that song "Hello Mr. Brown, come on over town" or am I totally wrong there?

I though of acting skills and intelligence :D

Yes, they did, though it's just called "Mr Brown". Latest hit was "President of Boarderland".
There are some other nice songs where I usually find the band bad in general, but the specific song good - e.g. "Ring of Fire" of H-Blockx

Man, I cringe every time I hear the H-Blockx version of that song. Johnny Cash would be rolling over in his grave if he were dead.

That Mr. Brown song has to be one of the catchiest songs ever - a real "Earwig", as you Germans would say!

I don't know this song, but i hope that it isn't a cover of the Death Angel classic with the same name (great metal ballad).

Anyone already heard the "Steuersong"? It's by Elmar Brand with the voice of Chancellor Schröder to the melody of "The Ketchup Song". At the moment it's still available as free download (www.madral.de is the site where I have it from - it's about 2M, mpga-file), but as it is quite successful on radio it might go the commercial way soon.

    Lyrics:

    Spoken intro:

Das ist jawohl mal der Hammer, Leute. Kaum braucht man von euch mal ein bißchen Kies für Vatter Staat, schon ist man beliebt wie Fußpilz. Dabei will ich nur euer Bestes: euer Geld.

    Stanza 1:

I'll have to check that out Olaf. I was kind of a fan of the Kanzler-WG, so I'm sure this will be funny too.

I doubt it's a cover of the Death Angel classic! But I bet you know this song. The chorus goes "Give me shelter when the day comes crashing down on me..."

I know that the Donots made a EP with metal cover songs (Anthrax and others), and after reading the name of the song...
But yes, i think i know this song. It was on heavy rotation on Viva2 some months ago. Definitely not a Death Angel cover !

Hi guys, I'm new to this board!
Usually I only read and do not post because my english isn't that good, but now I have to post.

Harald is my man, he is my idol.

And it's true, he has never been so good as he is now, he is a genius.

Raab is nothing against HS, the HS show is not only a late night show, it's art, theatre, comedy, education, besides sports the only thing I watch on TV is the HS show.

He is the best if he improvises IMO, that's when he is better than anyone else, but I do agree that his humour is very very German.
