ISTM that bottles were allowed, as long as they're empty. The problem being that the Rose Bowl allowed unopened bottles, but FIFA apparently didn't. The easiest solution: FIFA's website should say something like "Restrictions on outside items may differ based on restrictions set by local venues, variable weather conditions, etc. Please check with local venues in advance of the match."
That will never happen. I remember when the Qatari government said "we will not sell alcohol at games because it is against our laws," and FIFA said "what you meant to say is we welcome our corporate partners Budweiser and Heineken to continue refreshing fans in Qatar." FIFA also requires venues to stock and sell Coca-Cola products only, even if the venue has a PepsiCo contract. They dictate how the cities and venues will run their event and what is and isn't allowed. It's why Chicago pulled their application to be a host city and told them to eat shit.
I'll never forget how FIFA required a photo of Crew Stadium to have the Budweiser logo covered up because the official beer (or whatever) was Bud Light. All staff were given Adidas stuff to wear. Some of us may remember how MLS tried to get Pepsi at Crew games back in the Ohio Stadium games. Obviously, that didn't happen. As a result, there's a few Crew schedule cups with Coca-Cola logos. About 10-12 years ago, there was a really brief time when Pepsi was a league sponsor, but the team signed a deal with Coca-Cola. I have no idea what the end result was, but I remember Mark sending me an email "Pepsi sponsors the league. Coca-Cola sponsors the team."
Some of my stuff will go to the Columbus Historical Society, once they get their building in Franklinton up and running (old fire station that was once a TV store on Broad St,).
So its been a long while since I wanted to bring a bottle to a restaurant, but we have an occasion tomorrow and I called the place to inquire about a corkage fee. Thirty bucks. Now like I said its been a while, but that seems ridiculous to me. Am I wrong?
https://www.nbc4i.com/news/local-ne...ad-to-crew-stadium-concert-delay-frustration/ Stop me if you heard this before, but the in(?)actions of stadium management lead to frustrations for fans of the band Hozier.
Daughter #1 got me tickets as a fathers day gift (well, tickets for her and me to pay for her drinks). It was really funny. They tried to get everyone to leave the stadium and return to their cars as the storm rolled in. Event staff gave up once the first curtain of showers hit. The lack of information wasn't a shock for Crew fans like us, but it wasn't ideal. A bunch of people were asking about refunds as they walked out. A ton of lightning was flashing as they announced fans could return to their seats and during the soundcheck. There was another big strike right as Hozier took stage. Still, it was fun; I've never been wetter! Edit: It was great being back at HCS. I miss it!
Why would refunds be given when the event is delayed? This is why we have terms like delayed, postponed and canceled. This is why people need to learn the exact definitions of these non-interchangeable words. When people start talking about Crew games being "canceled" for lightning, where oh where did Timon get to?
Are there any baseball fans in here? Happy Bobby Bonilla Day! Quick version: He was a Mets player in the 90s. He took a deferred contract, which is still paying him almost $1.2 million every year on July 1st. He's also still getting more money from another team. Bernie Madoff (yeah, that guy) was involved. I think Bobby retired in 2000 or 2001.
Before that, both he and Barry Bonds (pre steroids) were with the Pittsburgh Pirates, in 1990. They still could not beat the Cincinnati Reds to get to the World Series against the Oakland A's.
Pablo Maurer left the Athletic yesterday and posted a thread of some of his work from the last seven years there. There's a lot of fun stuff, including the story from a few years ago about the creation of the hard hat logo. I've read a couple others he linked already and will be going back and reading the rest. For those without a subscription, pasting an Athletic link into archive.is usually gets around the paywall. After 7+ years, today is my last day at The Athletic. I'm going to do something I'm not very good at here - celebrate myself. Here are 20 of my best stories, in no particular order - I've written hundreds of features for the site, so this was a bit of a challenge.— Pablo Iglesias Maurer (@MLSist) June 30, 2025
That was the World Series that they won in four. Marge Schott was royally pissed off that she didn't get another game in Cincy, so she refused to throw the team any kind of victory party. She was a real piece of work
Ah the 90s, when the top players in baseball only cost a couple million dollars....as Marge pointed out in her own way.
One small thing in her favor, though (aside from buying elephants for the Cincy Zoo). She kept ticket prices low for the fans. This did not endear her to the rest of the league, as, at the time, visiting NL teams shared in the gate.
Yep--that's it. They also have the "Harrison House" almost next door, and rented space down by where Mt. Carmel was. They are hoping to get the Dierdorff (?) house, which was the first post office in Franklin County that's a block or two away (walking distance), but it may need to be moved.
With the recent Nordecke kerfuffle, this quote is hilarious, but only exceeded in unintentional comedy by this quote -- and recognizing that The Simpsons already did it.
