ISTM they're all drinking seltzers. The alcoholic waters are all the rage, or at least they were not that long ago.
I saw a report a couple months ago that said there are 70,000 acres of grapes in California that are going to be left in the field to rot because nobody wants to pay people to pick crops that no one will buy.
The other angle: I think we all know who'd be more than happy pick those crops. I'm not sure how many people would it for a liveable wage plus benefits.
If a country is prosperous for an extended period, eventually there end up being jobs that its citizens don’t want (no matter the pay). From personal experience, this is the case in both the UK and the US. My European friends tell a similar tale.
Doesnt matter. If nobody will pay you for the crop, then nobody is going to pay ten cents to someone to pick it. There just is no market for the grapes, because people arent buying as much wine.
Missed the point--these places likely can't sell the wine even if someone picked the grapes for free.
Is it a culture thing? Do people just not have the money to afford what they consider a luxury item? Or are they all smoking weed?
And a quick note if someone were thinking that the wine grapes could be used for food--they are different kinds of grapes and aren't seedless. Some are not too sweet. I've tried some of the leftovers after harvest at my SILs (there's always some that the grape picking machines miss). Concords are nice, tho--but again, there are seeds. Also, at commercial wineries, they use mechanical grape pickers for the most part.
When I was in college a couple friends moved into a rental house out in the country next to a huge farm where the corn was just tasseling. One guy told me he planned on sneaking out one night, grabbing a whole bunch of corn and holding a big corn roast party. I didn't feel like telling him that unless he was inviting a bunch of livestock he was going to be disappointed. He ended up picking a few ears one night to see if it was ready and figured it out.
https://nypost.com/2025/08/05/busin...en-z-drinkers-shun-bourbon-tariffs-take-toll/ Many with Mergers and Acquisitions in their LinkedIn profile are currently getting contacted by recruiters, asking if they would consider moving to Louisville as soon as feasible. The domestic booze industry has a whole lot of pain and consolidation ahead. Influencing state legislatures ... like Ohio's ... to roll back weed laws is only a temporary high (pun intended) and the illusion of a fix. It lets executives squeeze out another year or two of high compensation. And/or until they can find a buyer that will keep them in place afterwards.
The song back then was "Smoking In The Boys Room". Now it's "Vaping In The Boys Room". As much as the anti-smoking campaigns worked, they pushed the younger generations to vaping.
Somewhere along the way, some other moron pressed the idea that a Juul wasn't as bad as a Marlboro Red or a Camel King.
He kinda pisses me off every time I talk to him these days with that sort of bullshit, like he has achieved some sort of zen by not giving a shit about anything. Good for you, pal, not gonna happen for most people I know. A lot of people who struggle with addiction have co-morbidities that might have gone undiagnosed for their whole lives that maybe only manifested strongly with the dopamine pathways being warped by the addiction. Or, in the case of some people, their dopamine receptors are screwed up because of multiple other mental health issues, so they struggle with gambling and any other addictive substance. I fall into the second category. I try to steer clear of anything that is truly addictive.
There's always a market for Boone's Farm, grape juice, and jelly. I'm sure the grapes have to have some cross-capability to some other use. Retool some of your production facilities and grow with the times, or stagnate.
It isn't. The insane amount of shit in a normal cigarette is overwhelmingly worse than what comes out of a vape. The UK have been at the forefront of testing the effect of vaping on people. Certainly some of the studies are still out on the long term effects, but they also note that the preliminary studies show that it is much healthier than smoking traditional cigarettes. And that pushing the harmful narrative that they are equally unhealthy only serves to push people back to cigarettes. Which is not a desirable outcome.
Weed is not physically addictive like drinking is. Vaping is certifiably safer than smoking cigarettes. So if a person vapes THC (or eats gummies) and tobacco, they are better off than if they were drinking and smoking cigarettes. Y'all sound like ********ing squares, sitting in your dens, puffing your cigars and drinking scotch like it is healthy for you, and looking down on people who choose to do things that are far less harmful to their health in the long run. They aren't going to have cirrhosis of the liver. They are going to have a far more manageable high that doesn't usually make people foul tempered. And for the record, I don't do any of these things. I've vaped and smoked weed rarely in the past but I'm supporting my spouse's decision to stop using weed and alcohol. Oh, and by banning flavors of vape juice, they are not stopping kids from wanting to vape, they are just pushing adults back to cigarettes. But they feel like they have to do something. Kids would start smoking cigarettes if there was not another option. That's how you get cool with your friends, after all.
No. Some, yes. But most wine grapes are different from juice or eating grapes. I've tasted various wine grapes at my SILs On addiction? We may find that pot has issues there as well. Also, while there are genetic issues, there's some choice involved too in addiction. After having been given a shot of some pretty powerful stuff to overcome a bad gall attack, many years ago, I understood two things--I now had a clue why it was and is so attractive and powerful and second I was going to be very, very careful to avoid it in my life unless absolutely needed, and then just for a short time.
Boones Farm is only good for loosening up young girls you’re trying to drag into bed.Off brand mouthwash tastes better.
