That's interesting about Quaranta. I remember when he first came up people were wondering where he would play. Would he be a big winger in the mold of Figo, or play up top. I think that could be an interesting lineup. Also, how would Etch take being on the bench, if this would be the eventual lineup?

This could happen but Ben going to England is no sure thing. He looked good the end of last year but he needs to get back to his pre injury level before there is even a chance. Then there is the Work Permit thing. He may get close if he plays every game for the US this year but could still need to go to appeal. Yes he would have made the WC team if he was not injured but the appeal process is not a sure thing. ANd then, after that, someone needs to want him over there. We are starting to make in roads getting players place in England but they are not here knocking down our door. Reyna is there. McBride is getting his shot but that is due to a coach who loved him when he went over there before. The big contact that Ben has over there is coaching the England U21 team, not at a club. So, Ben's contract is up after this year, he has expressed a desire to get back to England but it is no sure thing that he will be there after this season.
Like I said, if he makes a full recovery, he will be gone. Arena will get him the letters he needs to skate through the work permitting process. English teams will be able to sign him for much less than an equivalent British player, so that will make him an enticing target. Also, he will be on display at the Confederations Cup in France this summer which will likely raise his profile in European minds (given a full recovery). I would be absolutely shocked if there isn't some interest from several countries in Europe for our players after that tournament if we show well.
So I'm guessing Stokes was a bad pick if he's not in the starting lineup by next year while Carroll or Woodsworth are.
The difference for Stokes compared to Woodsworth and Carroll is that Woodsworth and Carroll would be replacing starters who in fantasy might leave. For Stokes, our back line wouldn't change in the above lineups and is he remains a sub. Of course none of us know what's gonna happen this year, let alone in 2004 and I would think that we would get some kind of replacement players for the departed ones and those new guys might start. This is just a thread of whimsy while we are waiting 2+ months for the season to start.
Then we should have Freddie Adu up front with Eski after we trade Earnie and Warren to the Metrodonkeys for the first draft pick next year.
I am thinking that DCU will be counting on Olsen being gone after this year. In 2004, DCU will have to pay the full salaries of Stewart and Ivanov. Etcheverry's retirement (?) will provide money for this and some of the usual raises of other players. Assuming that DCU gets an allocation when Etcheverry leaves, Olsen's salary would be neccessary to pay for the new player. We can also speculate that at the end of 2004, Stewart will move on and his salary will be used for a younger replacement.
