everytime i watch a small bowl game, i think "that would look really great in a sold out mls team owned soccer specific stadium"
You know, I just hope that KP is able to get a deal done somewhere, somehow this year. Frankly, I'm beginning to wonder how much time the league (and it ultimately comes down to a league decision because McFarlane & Chang are only investor/owners, not franchise owners) is going to give us to get a soccer specific stadium deal done. When the MetroStars' new stadium is finished, I have to imagine that our RFK lease with the D.C. Government is going to be the biggest drag on the league's overall profitability. I really hate to say this but I really could see United being moved to Montreal, St. Louis, Miami, Portland or Vancouver if there isn't a deal in the works over the next year or two. I suppose that MLS would let us keep our team name, team colors and team records, but we really could be out or the league for a few years only to come back as a lowly expansion team. (sigh.)
Maybe DC United could agree to go into a joint venture with Howard U and build a new stadium there. Or American. Or Georgetown. Somebody in DC has to see the potential for a new, soccer specific stadium with a 30K capacity. Or maybe not. Merry F*ckin' Xmas, indeed.
I'm with you-I hope a deal gets done. The RFK situation is a financial drag-primarily on our franchise owners-that can't be absorbed forever. However, I believe McFarlane is more than just an investor/owner. He has a history of lining up developments in other areas. I don't think it's at all unlikely that he's working the Poplar Point as well as Greenbelt options. Chang also cares about this franchise, and that can't hurt. Overall, we need to see some progress over the next 18 months, but I will be surprised if we see public statements before the "real" deal is lined up-there is just too much downside to continue to offer teaser statements and then fail to deliver.
I hope Will and Victor sent Fenty a xmas card with a photoshopped picture of what Poplar Point could look like right now in mid-construction (including a bunch of dudes working and paying taxes) if not for his mis-spent greed.
I think you're right...which unfortunately means this execrable thread will go on and on and on. I can't decide whether it would be worse with or without teaser statements...
There's a better chance of Riz modeling her wardrobe on Sarah Palin than there is of DC United getting a stadium built anywhere within 10 miles of the White House.
See, it doesn't matter whether there's word from ownership or not... I too, though, think Poplar Point is dead. Not only because of the politics and DC residents' views of what money should be spent on, but also because of the obstacles, such as the Park Police heliport, that must be removed. Just too much in the way. And Sachin's prediction leaves room for Greenbelt. It's 14 miles from the White House.
As if the 2008 season couldn't get any worse... I just did a Google search of "DC United" http://www.google.com/search?q=dc+u...-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1 according to the search, DC United is located in the Prospect Hill Cemetary.... Sad!
Well, the site is walkable from the Rhode Island metro station & even the Shaw station if you are feeling adventurous. Cemeteries have been moved before because of development.
Will the graves need to be relocated? There is plenty of room for tailgating and auxiliary fields as well.
DCU would include the corpses in the "official" attendance figures! It would bring new meaning to the term "Quiet Side."
And it is right across N. Capitol Street from a very large parcel of undeveloped property...did someone at MLS Net mess up in listing that address? Use 'view image' to see a much larger version.
Apparently there was some report that came out this morning by some economists stating that the economic impact for stadiums is just not there. One of the cable news channels this morning mentioned that a soccer team in DC (as it was reported over the air) was lobbying DC for a stadium. Not great news but at least some news.
