Re: Is it just me or does this make too much sense I don't know if they had that with JKC or his trust or Snyder assumed it. Either way they've already been there since '97 and seeing how long it would take to cut thru the red tape of DC politics, demolish RFK and build the Enormodome, I'd think time is on Snyder's side.
Re: Is it just me or does this make too much sense PG wouldn't miss him. They got a nice Sports & Learning complex out of it and even in these times, the land where FedEx is located has potential for development and that would be enough for Snyder to break even after building the New FedEX/IBM/GE Field at RFK Stadium.
Re: Is it just me or does this make too much sense I'm pretty sure it was 30 years, but it's not like PG doesn't have plans for the site. PG can be bought out.
Re: Is it just me or does this make too much sense Yeah, that bastidge is in the drivers seat no doubt.
I just do not see the world falling over to build Snyder that stadium You are dead right that he'd love it, but he's not hurting and has little leverage. He can't threaten to move from his own freakin' stadium. Building a billion dollar stadium in today's economic environment when he's playing in a ten year old 91k seat stadium 7.8 freakin' miles away just isn't going to happen.
Re: I just do not see the world falling over to build Snyder that stadium DC already went on record said there going to try to get them back to the city asap.....i dont have the link right now, but its in one of these stadium news ones.
He wants to host the SuperBowl. That will only happen with a dome stadium in the DC area. Since the Redskins were his childhood dream, returning to East Capitol Street would extend that dream. Add having more seats, more luxury suites and keeping up with the Jones, there are plenty of nonsense reasons to make such a move.
Re: I just do not see the world falling over to build Snyder that stadium Jack Evans is a sports nut. He'd build a stadium for everything. He's the one who salivates over the Redskins coming back within the boundaries. Problem is the Nats have such bad ink, portrayed as spoilt brats, many folks in the city and on the council are staying away from the idea of a publicly funded stadium. (Including ours. Thanks Nats, and thanks Tony Williams for brining them to the city). And be sure, there would be nothing modest about a new stadium for the Redskins. Danny doesn't do modest and he want it all paid for by the city.
Re: I just do not see the world falling over to build Snyder that stadium He owns the stadium AND the land in PG County. How much do you think that land is worth? FedEX is 12 years old, by the time all this comes to pass it'll be another 10 years. It's doable and very possible. I'd say there's a better chance of that happening than DCU building a stadium in the District.
A better stadium inside the District and maybe bigger. In many of the fans' eyes he would be forgiven for all of his past mistakes if that were to happen. When we're stuck in RFK and the SoccerPlex it's hard to say this, but FedExField sucks compared to other modern stadiums for professional teams. It's a big functional stadium with no character. Snyder wants the Super Bowl, international soccer matches, NCAA tournament, bowl games and all of that. He probably wouldn't mind having half of the possible attendance if he had twice as many boxes and suites. DC and the mayor expressed interest last year and I think they even wrote a formal letter recently... Supposedly, he would want a mixed development plan like United wanted at Poplar Point where he is given the land and infrastructure.
Even as a Skins fan, I have to admit the new stadium in Arlington is amazing. I've been following it some for a while now, but it seems like it just popped up the past few months. While I understand the motivations, I still think the idea of field-level suites is hilarious. I understand the roof, but had my own visions for it. Maybe the Skins will see things my way... I would like to see a grass field like those stadiums in Germany and Arizona. Of course, the Skins screens better be bigger. HKS is doing a good job with Arlington and other projects.
I hate to be an asshole (actually, I don't), but can't we let this stadium thread die its natural death by taking this discussion to BigNFL or something? I'm so pissed and discouraged about a United stadium that I don't even want to see this thread until there is real news... Assuming my eyes still work at that advanced age... And, while they are still working, it's so nice to see that Philadelphia is going to be breaking ground for their new stadium in the Fall.. .just about the time that RSL opens up their soccer palace. Shit!!! Actually I am way, way beyond pissed.
Yea, I'm with SeahawkDad about this one. Those cretins up in Philadelphia get a shiny new stadium, whereas DCU plays in the dumb held together with duct tape and superglue. There's virtually no news about the stadium. Yes, I know the city council is on vacation, but how's that any different than when they're in session? I really think that Fenty is trying to kill the stadium deal by tabling it. He won't come out and say there's no deal. Instead, he'll keep making vague noises that he's 'interested in a new home for DCU'. Meanwhile, the issue is permanently on the backburner and dies of neglect. That way, Fenty can kill the deal without having to look like the badguy to the citizens of DC. This upcoming session of the counsel should be the *last* go around regarding the new stadium. Either the city council gets serious about building the team a stadium, or the team leaves for the suburbs. If the team walks, like I said before, put the stadium in either Arlington (which would be one hell of a spot, still within the boundaries of old DC), or PG County. I can live with a stadium outside DC proper. It won't be ideal, but who cares. Once I'm inside the new stadium, watching the black and red smoke their opponents, I won't really care where it's built. Just make it within driving distance. I look forward to the day when DCU moves out of RFK, and the old stadium is demolished. They should detonate it with NYRB inside.
Well, about a year ago when Fenty put a kabash on the stadium deal and opened Poplar Point to bidding, I got criticized for stating that Fenty had an ulterior motive and was taking it away from MacFarlane. Received a few neg reps, warning from Riz. If only the club decided to go straight to PG at that time and get the process going. Some of you seemed very attached to having the stadium in DC and make Greenbelt sound like it is out in the boonies. We are talking about 11 miles north of RFK and on the Metro line. This is not Dallas to Frisco. Maybe if the effort is made instead on the team to make the move to PG, ground may just break soon enough. Just saying.
Sorry about that and sorry about this post keeping the thread alive.... I like stadium pr0n. I think I'm a bit of the opposite of you. Soccer stadiums in the US have become depressing to me. I can still get caught up in baseball and football stadiums though. For limited amounts of time, they can keep me distracted and get my mind off of the lack of progress for United. On the other hand, I want to poke the eyes out of the person closest to me(I imagine I wouldn't like it if I did it to myself) whenever I see pictures or reports of progress on MLS stadiums. I hate RSL and Philly even more right now. Thank you. Something I didn't notice about Greenbelt until looking at Greenbelt Station and Google Maps again a couple of days ago is that there are entrance/exit ramps with 495/95. I don't go around there often, but why hadn't I noticed that? I always thought I had to take the Kenilworth exit. That makes getting to what is now just trees and surface parking lots a lot easier and quicker.
SO many ways in and out around etc. with Greenbelt- it's like combining ways to/from both University of Maryland and FedEx fields. 495/95 gets you there, Route 1 gets you there, Rhode Island Ave gets you there, 295 gets you there, Greebelt Road, Kenilworth Ave., .....you could get lost anywhere east of D.C.- chances are you'd end up in Greenbelt.
I thought Cherrywood Lane was the only way to the station. But, yeah...I've found myself in Greenbelt a few times and not known where the hell I was until a few days later.
And the state will be paying for expanded roads and access to Greenbelt as part of a planned commercial expansion there - The "infrastructure" is already paid for - The only decision for MD govt to make is whether its economically feasible to have a stadium there - This site is so much farther along than Poplar Point with Env Impact Statements, moving the Heliopad and waiting for USDI's approval
