Oberle Named Associate Women's Soccer Coach
The only assistant coach the program has known, Janet Oberle has been promoted.
    Feb. 22, 2003

Now that's entertaining. Promoted from AC (assistant coach) to AC (associate coach). It's about time. ;)

The Billikens are going to miss Burke, who I guess is now a Courage, but I see that the Bills have signed a 6-1 goalkeeper. It's been 4 years since we've seen anyone between the pipes besides Burke.

XYZ are you the St Louee fan? Just saw this story on signees for the Billikens.

    http://www.collegesports.com/sports/w-soccer/stories/022803aac.html

The names dont mean anything to me but I have watched this Busch team play ( all four apparently played for Busch) and it was a pretty good team.

If the Bills have some talent to go with it maybe they will give that boys a run for best soccer team on campus. And in case you dont know mens soccer, that would be a big compliment indeed.

Well, I'm a SLU fan, not the only one, although there was a time when the women's team didn't have many fans. The first SLU men's game I ever saw was 40 years ago, the first SLU women's game just 7 years ago. (that's the first year they had a team)

The women's team has a long way to go to match the history and success of the men's team, that's for sure, but the women have played some excellent soccer on occasion. They were actually ranked last year (#25 nationally for a week ;)), but the way their season ended was quite a disappointment. They lost early in the conference tournament. A similar thing happened a few years back.

The SLU women's teams generally have played very good defense, but they've had trouble finishing. That was definately their problem last year. It's too early to judge what they'll be like this year. Hope springs eternal. But they've lost a very good GK in Meghann Burke.

Over the years, SLU has gotten a number of players from Busch, which has always had good teams.

    Let's go, Billikens!

    Bump.

So, is this the year we make the national tournament? The Bills deserved it last year, except for the way they bombed out in the conference tournament. 1999 was a good year, too. They won the regular season conference title but, again, the Bills bombed out in the conference tourney.

"Championship soccer is a tradition at SLU". Trouble is, they're talking about the men's team.

I got my renewal forms for season tickets. Just like last year, the Bills will host the "Toys for Tots Tournament". But, what's this? Navy won't be coming, so it can hardly be called the "Military Acadamies Soccer Classic", which is what it has been since the beginning. Aargh.

OK, now Janet Oberle is an assistant coach. Meghann Burke went to play in de WOOSA (they fail to mention that she was waived). SLU has signed a 6-1 GK from Las Vegas to replace her. Lots of luck.

There's nobody on the home schedule but the usual suspects.

Oh, well, this will still be the season the Bills make the national tournament.

    Go Billikens!

    Speaking of Meghann Burke

It was announced last spring she was named goalkeeper coach for Duke. She will also attend law school there--whoo hoo!

This represents an interesting symmetry. St. Louisan Bill Hempen leaves Duke for Colorado and St. Louisan Meghann Burke comes in 1 year later.

Back from the unknown hideout he possesses in the Oakville area, Johnny has returned:

Well SLU season is about a month away and the two of us.........myself and xyz for sure.........maybe there are more of us.....are wondering if this is the year we make it to the big dance. Well my honest answer is.........who knows lol. I think that once again the talent is there but I'm a bit worried about the lack of experience in the nets. But I guess we shall see. I have a good feeling about this season though.

    Yep, yepyep.

The Bills have Amanda Martin, a sophomore from Nashville who played GK at Arizona last year. In fact, she played against the Bills, and gave up 3 goals to them.

They also have Lyndsay Gensler, a 6-1 freshman GK from Las Vegas. In high school (Bonanza), she lettered in basketball, softball, cross country and volleyball. In basketball she had 1,906 points, 1,152 rebounds, 550 assists. She was named the school's Outstanding Female Athlete and had her jersey retired.

The other keeper they show on their roster is Sarah Schweitzer, a sophomore from Loveland, CO.

I'll be more interested in finding out if they have anybody who can score goals. I know, I know, Jamie Perry. What I mean is, anybody else.

    Answer to your question

I have an answer here..............we don't really need anybody but Perry. We'vve got a 6'1" keeper dude. 100 assists a year over a 4 year career (we assume) that's means she's tall and mobile. A tree of a woman can't get more than 2 assists per game and 100 per year works out to anywhere from 3-5 assists. This gal has got game coming out the wahzoo and in the ultimate worst case scenario she can help Pizzotti (SLU's women's hoops coach) finally get a team to the big dance. Big girl in goal wiht hands............it's like heaven :D

    Go Billikens!

I don't agree that Perry is all we need. One player can be stopped, and I don't consider Perry to be a spectacular finisher.

Even with a tall keeper with hands, I expect the Bills will give up at least a goal a game so the Bills need to score goals. As I said all last year, they need a tall target on set plays. The Bills' success on set plays last year was nothing short of pathetic. If they had done a little better on set plays, they'd have been in the national tournament last season, because they had just about everything else working.

You can't win if you don't score goals.

It seems the Bills have a new assistant coach - somebody named Kelly Young - I wonder if she'll have to sit on a ball rather than a cooler - now that she's been promoted. ;)

    Re: Go Billikens!

We can talk about the other stuff like goalies with hands and all but the truth is that if we don't score we won't win............the most true statement ever lol
However the real worry behind the season has to lie with whether or not Kelly becomes a ball sitter. If she does we are finished lol. Give it up now :)

Youthful Billikens anxious to start push toward first NCAA Tournament bid.

    "Youthful"?
Shoot, compared to the men's team, the women's team is old, returning 16 letterwinners, including six starters.

Apparently they plan to use Anny Lucier as a back (sounds good to me - as long as they don't use Jamie Perry as a sweeper), and there's a keeper controversy (something they've never had since they returned to campus) - sophomore transfer Amanda Martin and 6'1" freshman Lyndsay Gensler will battle for the keeper spot.

    Yee, haw!

Youthful Billikens anxious to start push toward first NCAA Tournament bid.
    Aug. 14, 2003

    A tournament bid?
That sounds a little ambitious, doesn't it?

    Fuhghetaboutit! This is the year!
Conference title, NCAA tournament. You heard it here first.

    I had my doubts.

But that was before I actually saw this team.

    The questions were:
    • will Perry have help up front?
    • can the Bills score?
    • can they score on set pieces?
    • is the defense and goalkeeping solid?
The answers are "yes", "yes", "yes" and "yes".

Help for Perry up front? Perry may be overshadowed.

Score on set pieces? I guarantee it.
(I know they stunk on corner kicks last year. This isn't last year.)

Defense and goalkeeping? Has there ever been a Billiken team that wasn't solid on defense?

What did we learn in the preseason game aginst SEMO last night?

We learned that the Bills are loaded for bear.

    Goalkeeping?

Amanda Martin, the transfer, can play. She was solid last night.
Sarah Schweitzer saw some time in goal in the second half. She won't see much more.
Lyndsey Gensler, the 6'1" freshman from Las Vegas didn't play. She will, somewhere. They can put a regular jersey on her and play her at forward if they want. Put her on the basketball team, the volleyball team, whatever. If the Champion doesn't want her, I'll bet you somebody does.

    Freshmen?
    Well, how about:

Courtney Hulcer - had a goal and an assist last night. She has speed, ball skills, and she can finish. And she hits the meanest corner you ever saw. Her goal last night reminded me of (drumroll please), Jenny Kehl: She dribbled past two players and ripped a shot far post. Talk about finishing!

Dee Guempel - I don't know about finishing, but everything else I said about Hulcer applies to her.

Anna Schuch - speed, ball skils and a shot. What more do you want?

I'm guessing that Hulcer, Guempel and Schuch will all start. Opposing defenses are going to have their hands full with these three plus Perry. This team will light up the scoreboard.

    Anny Lucier at sweeper:
This is not just a good idea; it's a fantastic idea. After three years as a semi-regular forward / all-purpose player, in her senior year, Lucier will become the best Billiken sweeper ever. I am predicting it. Look for her to take virtually all of the Billiken free kicks, get plenty of assists, score on corners, and be the solid anchor of the defense. This will be Anny Lucier's year.

With Lucier at sweeper, Kornfeld, Nabozny and Carlson in front of her, and either Martin or Gensler behind her, this defense is as good as any the Bills have had (and that's saying something!)

If this team plays with half the heart that last year's team did in the second half against Charlotte, they're going places, places no Billiken women's team has ever been. This dog can hunt. I am definately looking forward to this season. Hope spring eternal.

    Bills Run Past SEMO 3-2

The game wasn't nearly as close as the score would indicate. The Bills have 30 players on their roster. They used only 19.

    Cincinnati
This may be the year for St. Louis. Cincinnati will have a tough start this year - four projected starters are now out after surgery or injury (2 knees, one compartment syndrome, one stress fracture in back). In the exhibition game against Ky, the most promising freshman had her leg broken in the first five minutes of the game. Another incoming freshman tore her ACL during the summer. The team is down to 14 field players, and a number of freshmen will be seeing a lot of time. The good news, if there is any, is that Marie Strelka (knee surgery in the summer, projected starting forward) is expected back by the conference opener, Rachel Lieberman (two year starter at left outside mid, had compartment syndrome surgery yesterday) is also expected back by the conference opener, and Amy Mink (two year starting center mid, knee surgery on Friday) is expected back by Sept 26 (after the first two conference games). The stress fracture (Ashley Roush, projected starting center defender) will most likely redshirt. Cincinnati's strength the past two years has been its defense, but we lost two starting defenders to graduation (one center, one left), and will be starting a freshman in the middle, who is very good, but will make freshman mistakes. The midfield was supposed to be the strength (with all four starters returing, who have played together for the last two years), but now two are out for the first three weeks of the season, and based on the Ky game, the freshmen playing those positions have a lot to learn. One can never truly prepare for injuries, and the team will not use them as an excuse (that is why you have a team), but I expect some bumps in the road as the team gains experience this year.
I will be following the team again this year, and will file game reports, particularly as Conf USA season begins. And XYZ, I will be in St. Louis for the Cinci game, so I hope to meet you then.

Thanks for the report on Cincinnati, BearcatFan. Sorry about all the injuries. That's a lot to overcome. That's more injuries than I ever heard of a team having at one time. I'm looking forward to your reports, and to seeing you at the Cincinnati game. I'll almost certainly be there.

Things are looking good for the Billikens. I thought last year might have been their year, but it ended in disappointment.

I was worried that the Bills would have no attack this year with the loss to graduation of one of the best attacking players they ever had, Jenny Kehl.

I just hope their freshmen are half as good as I made them out to be in my report on the Southeast Missouri game. I was definately impressed with Guempel, Schuch and, even more so, by Hulcer.

An article in the student newspaper confirms that those three will probably start:

I was also worried about goalkeeping with the loss of Burke, but Martin looks like she can play. And I'm dying to see what Gensler can do.

The defense looks as solid as ever. Junior back Tressa Pecher missed the SEMO match due to illness. She has played sweeper, but I honestly like Lucier there. At any rate, the Bills don't seem to be hurting for backs.

They play Arkansas St. on Sunday:
    Regular season home opener
    Billikens take on Arkansas State

Arkansas State was 4-14-1 last year, scored only 15 goals in 19 games and was shut out 12 times. Unless their attack has improved, they may have a problem with the Billiken defense.

First of all I wanna send my condolences to Bearcat fan as well.............how horribly unlucky for you guys. However, since I sit next to XYZ at all the SLU games I'm excited to meet you as well. I'll try not to be too mean :) Now I didn't have the opportunity to get a gander at this years edition of the Lady Bills during their exhibition match. I am though quite excited about this season. Losing a keeper the quality of Burke will be a very difficult obstacle to overcome, but I think the level of talent in our field players will help make up some of that loss. Rumors of a keeper controversy are circulating and I was wondering whom XYZ thought should be between the pipes for the Lady Bills. Well regardless.........the program has improved lately and I seriously think that this could be a year for an NCAA tournament bid (I think I said that last year too but well I don't care).

Have you ever heard of "Hulcher, Guempel and Schuch"?

    Is that a law firm?

Actually, those are Billiken freshmen who recorded scoring points today at beautiful Hermann Stadium on the campus of St. Louis U.

We knew going in that the game would be a blow-out. I predicted maybe 3 or 4 to zip.

Actually, it was worse than that:
Billikens Romp Past Arkansas State, 6-0

No offense to Arkansas St., but the game wasn't as close as the score would indicate. ;)

The Billikens took 39 shots to ASU's 3, and had 7 corners to ASU's 1. The only thing even about the game was the number of fouls, with each team recording twelve.

We didn't learn much that we didn't already know. The Billiken freshmen to watch are, as mentioned before, Hulcher, Guempel and Schuch. I stand by my previous prediction that the Billikens are going to rack up some goals this season, as well as the prediction that they're going to score some goals on corners. Honestly, I think this will be the best attacking Billiken women's team ever.

Add freshmen Hulcher, Guempel and Schuch to junior Jamie Perry and what have you got?
Answer: a problem for opposing defenses.

I don't know that any previous Bills teams have posed as much of a problem for opposing defenses as this team will. The Billikens will be coming at them from all directions.

The defense seems as solid as ever although, to this point, it hasn't been tested. But, get this, the Bills have back-up keepers who have actually seen playing time. We've seen three times as many keepers in two games as we've seen in the previous four years.

That's right, sports fans, the Bills 6'1" freshman keeper from Las Vegas, Lindsay Gensler, played in the second half today, and recorded two saves (both routine). The Bills GK coach, the indomitable Jay Zaber, has more than one keeper to choose from. Hopefully, this Billiken team will be half as indomitable as Jay Zaber is. :D

The Billikens improve to 1-0-0 on the season.

St. Louis.......Humid..........In August???????????? you kidding me dog?????? lol

Yes it was a soliid offensive showing yesterday by the lady bills on Sunday but I smell intersting things afoot. First of all I think it's great that Coach Champ got a new lawfiirm, much better than the lawfirm of Dewey Cheatem and Howe (led by Hugh Louis Dewey known by his frineds as Huey Louis Dewy). But seriously I'm very proud of the new Lady Bills especially on the offensive end of the spectrum. I think though we have a controversy in goal as Lady Luck from Las Vegas, aka Lindsay Gensler made two saves (though admittingly rather routine they were). Regardless I'm sure both keepers have learned from the Indomitable GK coach Jay Zaber (who knew he was from Camerooon?) Well......I think this weekend against Indiana and is it Air Force (do they have a bus XYZ????) the Lady Bills could establish themselves as a force this season ;)

The Bills had a nice 1-0 win Friday night a over a good Indiana team. (Indiana was ranked #19 in the Soccer Buzz preseason poll) The Bills' goal was quite respectable. Kelly Ferguson sent a nice pass to Dee Guempel who did a good job of heading the ball over the keeper.

I will say again: This is probably the best attacking Billiken team ever. For the first time in their history, the Bills have lots of players who can score. The freshmen trio of Hulcher, Guempel and Schuch continue to impress and they're making Perry look better. Add Cigno and Ferguson to that, and it's a pretty potent attack.

The write-up on the Billiken website is an accurate summary: Billikens top Hoosiers 1-0

It was a well-played game between two good, evenly matched, teams, and the second game of the 7th Annual Military Acadamies Soccer Classic. "Since when are SLU and Indiana military acadamies?", you ask. Don't ask.

The first game was Army vs. Air Force. Army dominated and Air Force won, 1-0. The goal, by the way, was legitimate. The keeper caught the ball, but fell into the goal with it.

Army Women's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Heartbreaker to Air Force

    Falcons blank Army, 1-0

BTW, the 39 shots the Bills took in their 6-0 drubbing of ASU last Sunday is not a school record. The record is 45 shots against Western Illinois in 1997. That game, which I actually remember, consisted of nothing more than the Bills taking target practice at the WIU goal.

The Bills play Air Force this afternoon in what amounts to the tournament championship game (since SLU and Air Force won Friday night).

    Go Billikens!

Today, on a beautiful late summer afternoon in the Gateway City, the Billikens dominated Air Force, but had trouble scoring. The Air Force keeper, J.J. Wolf, played well and kept Air Force in the game.

The game went to two overtimes. In the 105th minute, the Billiken freshmen finally struck.

    Saves 2 10

Yet another freshman, Mo Hughes (St. Louis/ Nerinx Hall) had a good game for the Billikens today, as did the normal suspects, Hulcher, Guempel and Schuch.

So the Billikens won the Military Acadamies Soccer Classic, despite the fact that SLU is not a military acadamy.

The Bills are now 3-0-0. They play Pennsylvania and Princeton next weekend in the Princeton Tournament.

    Go Bills!

    Re: Go Billikens!

First of all I wanna give great credit to the Air Force Keeper. J.J. Wolf played a hell of a tourament and really kept the Falcons in both the games, considering how Air Force was dominated twice in reality and still were able to win the game on Friday. That being said though, the Lady Bills should have buried the Falcons. That many shots is annoying when you don't score. But on to happier subjects.
Those freshman for the Bills are awesome though and this could really honestly be our year to make the big tourament. Now on to Princeton to play two teams I know very little about except their players are pretty smart ;) Also I noticed today that despite the good record so far the Lady Bills are still honorable mention in the region according to Soccer Buzz. I guess the couple of dogs owned by the founder of the site weren't impressed with the lack of finishing. War Billikens

Yea, Air Force would have been out of both games last weekend had it not been for her. As it was, they actually won a game.

The speedy freshmen make this the best attacking team the Bills have ever had. That's not saying much, since whatever success the Bills have had in the past has been based primarily on defense.

They haven't scored on a corner kick yet, but it's just a matter of time. They did score on two free kicks that were like corner kicks.

They play Penn and Princeton this weekend -- two teams they've never played before.

What the heck is a Billiken, anyway? ;)
