UC Santa Barbara beat JMU 3-1 on Friday nite, and St. Louis beat JMU 3-1 today, outshooting them 22 to 6. SLU's goals against JMU were scored by Jack Jewsbury, Mike Kirchhoff, and Jason Cole. I'm not sure about the other two games, I'm pretty sure that SLU beat Southern Missouri State 2-1, but dunno about SMS-USCB.
SLU Weekend Action [R] Well SLU finally got its first wins this weekend. Played SMS on Friday night in front of about 3000. Good atmosphere but honestly SLU looked like crap out there for the first 65 minutes. The defense broke down so many times I am surprised that the limited offenseive ability of SMS didn't score more goals. BUt like I said that was the first 65 minutes. Somewhere around Kevin Wickart's direct kick goal, SLU started turning it around. They pulled Jewsbury back to a center mid position and pulled Jason Cole up front with freshman Cooper McGhee. SLU started to absolutley dominate SMS. And then with thirty seconds to go, Joe Hammes has the ball in the left corner of SMS's half, passes to the corner of the eighteen yard box to Danny Wynn, and Wynn sends a somewhat low cross that deflects of a defender right to Cole, and boom botta bing......GOAL!!!!!!!! with 10 seconds to go. Oh man...its was awesome. Anyway, looking for some thoughts from others at the game...either game actually. We beat James Madison 3-1 on Sunday. BUt I was at the SMS so a few observations.. a) Cole needs to be up front. Something changed when he was up there and Jewsbury came back to Center mid. Up to that point we had no control of the middle or solid offense. b) Cooper Mcghee is a stud. I said at one point during the game that he looked like he was a senior playing out there because you could tell he was busting his ass to try to win the game. c) Kevin Wickart makes some stupid mistakes but did anyone see those 35-40 yd cross field passes he was making to the toes of our forwards. Nice. I'll take a 6'2" 190 lb fullback anyday. He's huge. plus the goal was nice. d) Did we start out the game playing 4-4-2? If we did, it wasn't working. There seemed to be some confusion on defense in the first half. When SLU changed to 3 fullbacks instead with Gannon in the middle, things started to work. Why? no idea especially with Cole out of the back field. Gannon was taking charge back there similar to Tappel last year. Good to see. e)Gotta love Danny Wynn on the outside. f) Nick Walls and Andrew Moses dribble way too much. Sorry but Walls holds back the team up top. g) Vito's Pizza before game: $25. SLU ticket: $6 dollars. Game Program: $1. Game winning goal with ten seconds to go: Priceless.
Yes they did! At that point they were winless on the season, trailing SMS and they looked like crap. I was not a happy camper. The Bills were playing long ball, and it wasn't working. It was a totally different game after they did that. Cole belongs up top with McKee. They dominated JMU on Sunday like that, and with Joe Hammes in a central mid. The long ball didn't work, but moving people around did. Walls was effective on Sunday. If you can beat 2 or 3 players in a row, as he did a several times, dribbling is not so bad. Gannon was impressive. The last 20 minutes against SMS, and the domination of JMU on Sunday were encouraging. The JMU goal was well-deserved, though - a great ball out of the back that totally beat the SLU defense - something the Bills will have to watch out for. Hutton looks good in goal as long as he isn't trying to play the ball with his feet. Whew boy! Something to work on. The game against JMU was really physical at times, with some ugly challenges, but I think inconsistent calls by the ref contributed to that. A few more cards might have helped. SLU outshot JMU 22-6. In the other game on Sunday, UCSB totally dominated SMS right from the beginning, and beat them 4-1. The SMS goal came in the final minute, spoiling a shut-out. SMS finished the game down 2 players. They lost a player to two yellows in the first half, and another stopped a goal with a shoulder/upper arm in the second half. UCSB was taking target practice at the SMS goal for a good part of the game. SMS did not have a good day. There were several cards in that game, all deserved. Too bad that ref didn't do the SLU/JMU game. He could have had a field day handing out cards.
